Thursfield too small and more suited to eventually have a crack at FB.

Look at Melbourne they took Fergusson, Rivers and Miller as well as Carroll over a couple of years and Rivers and Miller are very good players for them and Ferguson looks ok which has helped to provide stability , size and height thus allowing the dees to be back to back finalists.

Sorry Craig, don't buy this sweeping statement. Granted Thirsty still needs some meat on his bones, however he has shown enough to tell me that he has the playing style to be a CHB, PROVIDED he continues to be groomed and educated at BP for this season and he puts on the necessary bulk. The height difference is marginal between he, Rivers, Miller, Cornes and even Rutten (who must have surely be the best CHB for 05). He's not ready yet, but he could be for 07 or 08.

Would like to see Schulz there.  He played well at CHB in last game of last year and is being groomed for the position again this year.  Would prefer to see Hall playing on the ruckmen/forwards of the opposition as he has the height to contest with them but also has the agility to run off them.

Agree entirely BrisTiger

if the dees are so fantastic because they recruited KPP like rivers etc why have they not done anything with it?

because it takes a good blend of quality mids & quality talls - you cant get them all at once TW has opted to take the mids first, the KPP will come later

as far as CHB goes if *smile* is not better equipped to handle this than Hall i will go hee...

lets wait and see this year *smile* wll hold down CHB dont worry about that

I have no issue whatsoever with Jay being given a crack at CHB but where does Hall play then cos he aint a Forward nor is he overly reliable overhead to play as a key forward.
Jay on the otherhand has the overhead strength, and more natural ability to play as a forward than Razor to be a more dangerous forward option than Hall, whilst Hall is probably more likely to provide run from CHB which is requisite.
I think for team balance if Ray and Sarge are to play in the same side that Ray will play at CHB and Jay as a key Forward which will then bring in to question playing Knobel, Staff and Simmo in the side making it very top heavy, not to mention the inevitable inclusion of Patto for a game here and there over the course of the season.
Apart from Jay being a more constant fixture in the side , possibly Willy as well and an occasional appearance from Patto over the course of the year , our side will feature the same height prettty much for the seasons duration ie Richo, Gas, Simmo, Knobel, Kellaway , Staff and Hall.
Add Jay and Thirsty Willy to the side and we wont see a great deal of the others at all over the season unless injuries strike.
Our other talls, Patto, McGuane, Limbach and Hughes will spend most of the year in some cases all of it at Coburg.

I can understand why they wanna play Schulz at CHB because the kicking coming out of there from our talls i.e. Hall, Gaspar and Kellaway is deplorable. Easily the worst in the league.

However, I do not see Schulz as a key defender. Not yet, anyway. Still looks more like a key forward to me, which is where I think they will end up having to revert back to playing him at some point in the year.

Is he quick enough to keep up with mobile forwards ? Not sure. And who else is gonna help Richo out on the forward line for strong overhead marking ? Stafford ? Only in the goalsquare where 90% of the time the ball will be punched away from him anyway.

That’s why I see Schulz ending up back in the forward line in a permanent position at some stage during the year.

Along with a general lack of quality aggressive characters in our side, quality key defenders are another one of our chronic deficiencies imo.

Yep agreed Reddog.

Specialists down back are what is required. 8) ( by no means is either Hall or Jay a specialist Key back which shows how poorly this club has recruited and managed their lists for past 10 years)

So we have to try plug holes with guys such as Jay and Ray or guys like Leys, Laffy, Francis, Scott, Keays, Howat, Gwilliam, Breman, Jackson ect

Jay just plays as a forward and has more natural ability to play as a forward for mine.

Hall is not a forward pure and simple and aprt from CHB doesnt offer too much outside of that position, which is why he should have been traded if they aint gonna play him there.

Hall for mine he will end up at CHB and Jay will end up playing in the forward line.

I think we all know Red, Jay is going to get first crack at CHB but would you prefer he makes it there or becomes a key forward?

Sounds like a good analogy Craig, considering Hall was once trade bait, he has certainly done 'the hard yards', looks more confident and fitter. We'll need a solid defender to take on the much bigger CHF's, and Schulz is about another 5-10 kgs from being bullied.

Like I say Carnoustie Tiger, I can understand why they are giving him a shot at it. And to that end, whilst I'll be happy if he succeeds at either end of the ground, I'll be more happy to see him suceed down back versus him suceeding up forward because when you consider it, we have a few more likely forward types (e.g. Hughes, McGuane, Limbach etc.) coming through than we do have likely kpp defender's coming through.

lets face it - hall if hall cant play CHB he cant play anywhere
in fact i would say if he wasnt so tall he would not be on our list
he trys hard, but he has poor decision making and poor foot skills - that rules him out of the back half
he cant take contested marks and is a poor set shot at goal - that rules him out of the front half
because o0f his height he really cant play anywhere else, he is not big enough or smart enough to play 1st string ruck
i think you understand my thoughts on Rays abilities

*smile* on the other hand is a diff kettle of fish, he has good skills, is mobile, tackles and has good hands in fact he is a smart footballer, he is also a good set shot and good mark (yes maybe not as fast as hall but thats why you have rebounding HBF)

*smile* will develop as a CHB this year, in time he will probably replace Stafford in the front half, but TW sees CHB as a clutch position and one that we are lacking in.

IMO - our talls are rated in the following order

1. Richo
2. Gaspar
3. Simmons (ruck)
4. Stafford (FFWD - but on his last legs)
5. *smile*
6. Knoble (ruck)
7. & on...... Hall, Pattison, and the rest all making up the numbers
