This kid can seriously play people.
I've given strong reasons in threads dedicated to him when we drafted him, but since then i have seen his name keeps popping up in a lot of threads on topics such as...he can't kick, did we overpay for him, why didn't he get games at Port etc and discussions of the type.
I've given my opinion / perception of his talent plenty of posts on other threads when his name has came up...how about we look at him statistically on a basic raw potential level.
I realise you can go into a lot more detail statistically but I am just trying to make a basic point as to his superstar potential.
Imagine you are richmond's recruiting manager in 2008 trade week and you have to select one of 3 prospective midfielders to be on your list.
How do these players compare after 28 games...
(Kicks, Handballs, Disposals, Marks, Goals & Tackles) Basic Stats I rate on a quick overview for potential on a purely statistical basis.
Player A (146 K, 250H, 396D, 87M, 16G, 71T)
Player B (111K, 229H, 340D, 91M, 2G, 53T)
Player C (177K, 187H, 364D, 95M, 0G, 42T)
Player A will turn 23 halfway through next season and stands at 184cm 84kg.
Player B will turn 26 before next season and stands at 187cm and 86kg.
Player C will turn 25 before next season and stands at 181cm and 84kg.
On those stats alone, who would you pick?
I've been comparing him on other threads to who I believe he can become a better player than, Cross, another good analogy I have seen of him on PRE is Brad Sewell. Both of these are fair comparisons aspirations wise. However with the way he plays he has the potential to be more of a goal kicking Cross type player.
Let's put names to the mystery players...
Thomson = A (146 K, 250H, 396D, 87M, 16G, 71T)
Cross = B (111K, 229H, 340D, 91M, 2G, 53T)
Sewell = C (177K, 187H, 364D, 95M, 0G, 42T)
This data I have collated from each of these players first 28 Home and Away Games (to give a fair comparison to Thomson)
Obviously this is a very crude guide, as you can break stats down in a lot more telling ways and time on ground is a important factor also, but this still shows some pretty good potential as all 3 of these players had similar roles in their sides to each other on first getting a game/time on ground i believe.
Like Thomson, Cross was savagely criticised for his handballing tendancy and inability to kick the football.
On people asking why Thomson has only played 28 games...
After breaking into their respective sides...
It took Thomson (2005 - 2008) & Cross (2002 - 2005) 4 seasons to reach 28 games. It took Sewell 3 (2004 - 2006). It's nothing unusual for less unheralded players compared to the Murphy, Judd, Hodge, Deledio, Gibbs types.
Please note: I am not saying my beliefs are based on these stats, I was never aware of them, I looked them up today after seeing in the Delist thread more discussion about Thomson and comparisons. As I said, this is just a very crude statistical representation to support my belief. I realise there is a lot more to these stats than what I have shown.
Just throwing some food for thought out there for people in the hope it will make them feel better about a recruit during a dreary off-season.
