Why Christmas will be better this year...

I usually hate that lull on Christmas afternoon when conversation inevitably turns to football and some smart@#*e relative talks their team up for the coming AFL season. My only contribution to this conversation typically is to reflect on how effective duffel coats were in keeping me warm during the 1980s.

However this year will be different.

For the first time since we won our 10th game of the 1995 season I feel like we have more strengths than weaknesses. The key points that are different to our usual lists are that:

We have 2 rookies (Howat, King) who have the potential to make an impact at AFL level should injuries hit during the season.

We have a midfield that offers hope and promise (Tuck, Johnson, Deledio, Polo, Foley) not to mention COUGHLAN (inj) and Tambling (go you big red fire engine). I actually want to watch these guys try to compete with the best midfields in the competition.

For the first time we have quality injured players coming back (Coughlan, Newman, Thursfield) who we don't need to rush (although each is important - especially COGS)

There is enough upside potential in our list that we don't need to hope for or expect too much from our first year draftees.

Tivendale will need to fight for his spot...

We have an obvious lack of depth in the ruck yet did not chase likely failures Bryan or Cloke in the draft!!!

If we play both Krakouer and Kingsley (yes other teams supporters may scoff) teams will need to think carefully about how to match up on each as they are different players. They also take pressure off the development of Cleve and Patto.

I actually feel CONFIDENT that Richo will get to play finals (although not necessarily this year).

Does anyone have any other positive comments about the Richmond team of 2007 that I can use to stick it up non Tiger supprters on my Christmas afternoon?

Welcome to PRE nomemory. :)

You could point out that Nathan Brown is mean, hungry and determined to get out there and make up for lost time.

We've strengthened our back line with Polak to hold a key position freeing Joel to be more creative and attacking.  He'll wreak havoc on the opposition next season.

Our spine looks more stable with KK and GP both experienced in key positions.

We have several young players coming through together and competition for spots will keep them keen.

Our forward line will become an opposition nightmare.  It will be harder than ever to double man Richo because then the ball can be delivered to Kent with Browny and Krak ready to swoop.

We've been decimated by injury to important players.  The odds are the injury gods will keep away next year.  Well I hope so anyway cos it would make a massive difference.

Greg Tivendale, and there's no bias here from his PRE President  ;D . Will be a very creative player and his deadly left foot will be a real bonus now the team will be settled.  Watch him fire as his confidence grows.

Our midfield will be bolstered by the return of Cogs.  It was all out of balance last year when he went down and the performance reflected that.

We’re developing pace to burn.  Catch ‘em if they can.

Richo will play finals next season.  It's all in my crystal ball.

The future is so bright even I've gotta wear  8)

You might also be told we are so far off the good teams that you should stop fooling yourself.

As for postives, remind them we have the best song and uniform.

Thanks Rosy.

It was your invite to guests that got me off my butt and led to my post. Now I'm excited enough that my Christmas day 'conversation' may become a Dyer-Tribe. I reckon I may even convert some people's kids (especially when they receive jumpers with a big yellow number 12 or 3 or 17 on the back)...

In terms of being so far off the good teams...

I live in Victoria with Victorian relatives - I'm happy to debate which Vic team has the most potential come Christmas day. Thanks for the reminder about our club song and uniform. The club song is a much better proposition to open Christmas presents to when compared with the standard Walt Disney inspired Christmas carol alternatives...

Good stuff. :D

Surely everyone who reads this thread can think of one positive, one particular area, we'll improve on from last season.

Gee we all managed to think of something to tell Tiggy so she could stuck it up her Wobbler workmate so surely we can apply the reverse and help fly Richmond's flag on Christmas Day.

We have a vibrant and exciting coaching panel.

We have a stable administration/board and we're approaching solvency.

We had this year the largest junior membership of any club.

A bit positive is that we didn't draft stupidly like St. Kilda did. They obviously think that they will win the flag in 07. Why else would they draft 2 aging ruckman one with a long troublesome history. At least our men tending to draft a good mix of players with speed, toughness and height. (Ok I know some think we could have done with at least one more tall) but then again who was a better pick at our available choices. I say on the whole 'Bloody well done to Francis and Greg'.
