I’ve typed it out the gist of it for the benefit of those who can’t listen to it.
It’s fair to say RFC is disappointed with the decision by the AFL commission today in relation to our application to put Graham Polak on the Rookie List. It’s also fair to say GP himself is really disappointed with the AFL decision. We thought we put a strong case. Thought it was a reasonable application we made but the AFL commissioners made their decision.
Ben Cousins- There’s still 6 live selections in the draft for him. Unlikely RFC will select Ben at pick 6. Our opinion/position on Ben and our position on pick 6 in the draft has been fairly well documented. There’s 6 live selections for Ben tomorrow.
The decision was unexpected by us. We thought we put up a good case and it’s our prerogative to take a deep breath and consider our position. In fact it’s incumbent on us as a football club to do that for our supporters but it is highly unlikely we’ll select Ben tomorrow.
There won’t be a Board meeting.
We haven’t told anyone we’ll draft them. Has spoken to Ricky Nixon since decision and relayed the same message we gave when spoke to Ricky and Ben on Thursday, which was if our application had gone though we would have selected him at 7. Outside that it’s highly unlikely we’d select him.
We took a strategy to the Board in September that we wanted to continue to re-build our list with younger players. The scenario arose in the last couple of weeks with GP that in the view of his doctors, and in the view of GP himself, that he was unlikely to play in the first half of the season. We thought if a senior player was going to leave our list it was reasonable for us to revisit our strategy in looking at a senior player to come on to our list. Unfortunately that didn’t happen so we go back to the original strategy that we had.
All clubs would have been aware that players put on the LTIL cannot play at any level but if on Rookie list are able to play at VFL/VFL reserve level. Opinion of doctors it would be good for GP to play even a quarter at Coburg to assess him but we can’t do that with him on ltil.
We’re targeting a younger player and it’s quite possible he won’t still be there for rookie list for us to rookie him and promote him by putting GP on LTIL. Our prerogative is to take a deep breath and have a look at our position. All he can say is at that moment us drafting Ben is highly unlikely.
Our original strategy we took to the board was to select younger players and as it stands that is still our strategy.
Again said highly unlikely we’d draft Cousins. We have to make a long term decision which shouldn’t be based on a swinging public mood in the last week
We need to make a decision in the best interests of the RFC.
No regrets in not making our move before ND because the position with GP was because the last thing we wanted to do as part of his rehabilitation was to not give him the hope of playing senior football. Until Graham had come to that realisation himself there was no way RFC was going to put in an application to put him on the rookie list.
He thought the AFL didn’t have all the info they required and were forced into making a decision in a short period of time. Clubs had to make their own call.
Thought if we were putting GP on LTIL our strategy for younger players could be looked at seeing we were going to lose a senior player off list.
We tracked Ben most of the year, can speak to Ricky Nixon in terms of conversations held. Only circumstances recently we thought he could fit in with our long term strategy we had. Hadn’t thought we’d draft him until 2 weeks ago.
Take time. Take stock. Think of our requirements going forward. It was a decision we didn’t expect so we’ll go to plan b and make best decision for RFC.
