why does hawthorn get all its home games at the G

Hawthorn got shafted last year. This year is a catch-up for them.

Hawthorn have only played 8 home games at TD. The 3 we play this year takes our total to 31. Since TD opened in 2000, Hawthorn have had more home games at the MCG than Richmond. Not to mention their 16 voluntary home games in Launceston.

Accuse me of whinging, but I'm sick of us subsidising other clubs' favourable draws.

This is actually the heart of the problem.

Collingwood, Richmond, Melbourne and Hawthorn are the MCG co-tenants.
Ess, StK, Carlton, Kangas and Bulldogs are the Telstra dome co-tenants.

Fine so far.

Then it starts to go pear-shaped. Geelong want to play somegames in Melb but they want them at the G. BAd luck is the usual answer but as reigning premiers they have a bit of clout just at the moment. Money tlaks in AFL circles.

Ess and Carl want their bigger games at the G also. Collingwood just say "get stuffed" whenever the AFL start talking about the dome. Money talks. Still probably manageable though.

Now the Hawks have "Done the right thing by the AFL" and moved some games down to Tassie. The AFL will be nice to them because they are hoping to get something they really want form the Hawks. So all the pressure goes onto Richmond and Melbourne. Too many games at the G and not enought at the dome to fulfil contractual obligations.

The only way to resolve it properly is for one of the four MCG tenants to become a permanent Telstra dome tenant once the Kangas exit Victoria.

It won't be Collingwood, it shouldn't be Melbourne or Richmond for historical reasons.

Do the AFL have the courage to shift the Hawks permanently to the Dome? I doubt it very much.

Personally, I think 8 home games and 4 or 5 away games at the G each year is better than being a permanent TD tenant.

Hopefully, a few years down the track, the Hawks become a permanent fixture in Tassie and the problem will resolve itself.

Until there are no more than eight Victorian teams we are going to experience these problems.

I have always believed there is a bias in the draw to teams who play on one fixed home ground i.e. Interstaters - with the exception of the Swans who have 2 home grounds SCG and Telstra Stadium (Olympic Stadium).

But I have now come to the conslusion that good teams, great teams and premiership teams win where ever they play. And whilst having to play at the Dome is a pain in the arse for us Tiger fans the Tiger team must win games there if it is ever going to be part of a finals series - just like it also has to win games on the road (like the interstaters have to).

As far as Collingwood getting the dream run on the G and through the draw they never have really capitalised on it to win or control premierships - they seemed to be destined to be the greatest crowd pulling under achievers outside Richmond. They make the finals but they never seem to have the personnel or the hardness of run into the finals to go on and win in the finals. (As a side argument - I wonder how many of the magpie faithful would have stuck by them over the past 27 years had the magpies been treated like the Tigers have been by the AFL in that period - ie. home games away from the G etc etc.) No for mine Collingwood are all noise and no substance - but - as far as the AFL is concerned that noise sells bums on seats.

For a team to win the flag today not only do you need balance and depth in your players list and also stability and good administration in the club and a strong committed football department but you also need to have the ability to travel to games away from your home ground and win those games - for the Tigers it is only down the other end of the Melbourne CBD but lets start at the Telstra Dome.

Footnote - I do get pissed off when we play our home game at the Dome against a team whose home ground is the Dome - that does have a certain aroma about it!!!!

We have been the laghing stock of the AFL compitition for 6 years, when we start winning games and be a consistant finals contender, we will gain respect from other teams, pull in the crowds and then we might get better deals from the AFL. Until that happens, we will keep getting shafted. ;D
