Why I'd prefer an experienced player in the PSD to an extra rookie

Yeh Rosy,

Certainly better decisions can be made if more info is gathered.

Every year there are about 20 marginal, but worthwhile, boys who miss out on being drafted. Knowing who these 20 boys are is another matter.

In the past our club has struggled to even get a good handle on the not so marginal first 50 boys. It had little or no hope with the next 20. I know that info has improved alot over the last couple of years. (I've been supplying it.)

The PSD is a bit different. Most footy supporters, let alone footy depts, have a pretty good handle on who comes off clubs' lists. The daily press looks after this. That's probably why our club, in the past, has gone the soft option of the PSD.

As for the PSD, some years you can be lucky. As for this year the only player that appeals to me is 32yo Brett Montgomery to fulfil some sort of Mark Graham role. Montgomery is a class act and could play a Campbell type role, and could influence similar players like Polo, Raines, Roach et al.
It would depend on what money Montgomery wants.

As for Haynes & Green, well, even at their best they still struggled. Neither has much to offer us.

As for numbers. Numbers aren't any good if they're not up to it.

Spot on Phantom. I too truly believe that there are plenty of 18 year olds who have the talent. The key to our success lies in our ability to capture talent from those who miss out - ie the 20 marginal as mention. We should have all our rookie spots filled. To not do so is absolute madness IMO.

I actually don't agree - or rather would urge a little caution.  I have not seen anything yet that indicates that as a club we (having ponied up in the Claw challenge I feel I can say "we") are prepared to ditch players after one year if we don't think they are going to make it.

In a thin draft I actually would like to see us take a two year plan into consideration.  I would think it is absolutely criminal if we don't hack the duds (remove esteemed past contributors of limited ability and future  ;D)  have a full playing list and fill all our rookie spots by the end of NEXT year's rookie draft!

Actually it is going to get very willing after next year's delisting period, because under the scenario that I mention there will be precious few of our old favourties left.  The ones to go after next year will be young and chock full of "potential". You know, the troubles that other clubs have chopping players who can actually play, clubs who don't choose rejects in the PSD (counts the roos out).

We are talking about players who have been at teams for a min of two years, whose football departments say they are no longer worth a place on their lists. In Haines case he has also spent time on our list.

The only one's who have appeal as far as I can see are Brayden Shaw who strangely, was told before the trade period that he would be delisted, L McInnan?,training elsewhere, and Scott Meyer. Suggested in another thread that Meyer is training with us. Has anyone been able to confirm this?

Also can anyone tell me whether a player of Meyer's age can nominate for the PSD only, which maybe the best way to get him to Punt Rd?

I agree GPB there are so many kids that if put in the system can produce, often it is harder getting kciked off a list then getting on. If we take a mature palyer I will do a complete backflip on the direction that Miller & Wallace have us heading.

Each individual prospect needs to be assessed on his own merits.A good player is a good player.
:clap @ evo.
If there are no suitable players in the PSD we'd be silly to take them, but I hope we find one.
The rookie list is no guarantee of success judging by our past record.
All options should be considered and I live for the day we have a choc-a-block list.
Totally agree and adding to Phantom's choice of examples that need to be examined further

Custer's last stand. He had the army, he had the arrogance but he underestimated the enemy and its weaponary. The Indians had superior guns (obtained from illegal trades)that were able to fire multiple shots in quick successions and their accuracy was far greater than the guns used by Custer's army which were slow to use and no match.

So maybe we should not understimate what is in the PSD as the people we have entrusted might be able to find something that will fit our team balance while building the youth.

Do we quickly forget how much Graham influenced Thursfield and his development. Sure he might have been a fill in for a year, but we also extracted extra development onto the kids. Some ageing players are great value. Not all will work out & boy we have had some terrible choices, but everything is a gamble & Terry to his credit is the best we have had for awhile, so let him do his job.
have you actually stopped to think that just perhaps graham cost us the chance to rookie list a few extra kids.after all who would you rather have graham or foley and thursfield.

I have thought about it claw and with many posts from many PRE here, there is a difference of opinion.

IMO, a balance, it can't be all youth claw. Looking back on the Brisbane model, the youth was blended slowly through a number of years with their ageing players. Many site St Kilda as well but they too have experience players blended with youth. Its important to achieve a balance in your teams playing list.

Who is to say a total youth policy will work and when will the youth be allowed to mature. Not all young players cut it either. A paradox, do we start delisting or trading every player over 25yo. Draft only kids & wait for another 5 yrs hoping it will work out with no success along the way. If it was that easy every club would be doing it.

The kid's education is accelerated with the right experience around them on the ground and around the club. I strongly believe the right choice was made with Graham.

"We've made no secret of the fact we want a another backman, which is why we invited Brett Montgomery down and now Karl," Eade said. "We think Kasey Green is committed to someone, but we'll explore that avenue as well.

Interesting comments from Eade in the paper this morning.

That someone else better be someone else besides us. >:(

I would go with Drafting Mayer with a late draft pic in the national draft hes a KKP young looks the goods ..better than a recycled player

P.S anyone know much about Marc Bullen who is training  with us ?

Cant see for the life of me why we should go after someone like a Cupido or even a Guerra when we have a host of HFF,s who could do a similar job.HFF isnt a hole that needs attention.BP,,CHB,CHF,FB needs all the attention.
The more i think about it the more im inclined for the club to go down the Rookie path and bypass the PSD altogether.
If the rumour is true that Phanto,s boy Meyer is currently training with us then perhaps we should go in this order in the Rookie Draft:
pick 1-Meyer
pick 2-??
pick 3-McKinnon
Pick4-Gilmour[If he has pulled his finger out]

Is this true that Scotty Meyer is training with us and may be rookied !!!
Does this mean we could have access to the first young key defender prospect in god knows how long!!
This excites me Skippa hope this trumour is true.

Then we could rookie him and use our 3 draft picks on a CHF ie Cleve Hughes , a quality midfielder type ie Lower , Seal , Swallow , Muston and another key back prospect ie Taggart , Spangher , :clap

If an experienced player is to be taken in the PSD the only one i would take is Kasey Green who has very good skills and is a very good shutdown rebound type. Played very well in GF and would release Newman from defence into the middle which would hopefully kick Tivendale out of the side altogether hahahahaha
