PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Gotta say Leysy's bemused by the continual calls from most PRE pundits that we should automatically Rookie another young ruckman in the upcoming draft. really cant understand why & Leysy certainly hopes we dont. ( & I dont think we will).

The way Leysy sees it is -

They only take up one spot on the ground, you may have another rotating off the bench or from up forward. Given the fact we now have 4 of them on our list (3 of which are developing) then surely its not prudent list management to get yet another young ruck developing whilst we still have so many holes on our list that we need filling.

Where do we play them all - We only have one feeder club (unlike SA & WA clubs) in which to play them at a decent lvl. At Coburg next year we will already be trying to play Graham (Not ready for AFL yet), Putt & Ronaldson (the heartbeat & captain of Coburg). Where can we be expected to develop another young ruck outside of playing him in the twos all year.

We have a far more pressing need to get another key forward given the doubts on Shulz & Hughes coming up, as well as get some more midfielders into our system that can win there own ball. A quick crumbing forward that can snare a goal whilst putting pressure on opposition defenders is also much needed. Read: Gazzo.

They only way I would like to see us take another ruck is if our eye is on someone that can play NOW. Whether that be an more experienced ruck from the WAFL, SANFL in the rookie or PSD. If Simmo doesnt come up we could still be left very light- but only in the very short term.
