A mate sent me this the other day and really rammed home a point.

It wouldn't matter who coach's us until we get our recruiting right. You can throw Matthew Pavlich into the equation as well just to ram home the pain. Lets home we have made some serious progress in this area.

1999 National draft

Richmond

Aaron Fiora - Round 1
Ezra Poyas - Round 2
Scott Homewood - Round 3
Andrew Mills - Round 4
Ty Zantuck – Round 5

Bulldogs

Robert Murphy – Round 1
Daniel Giansiracusa – Round 2
Mitch Hahn – traded pick for Stephen Powell
Lindsay Gilbee – Round 3
Ryan Hargrave – Round 4
Nathan Eagleton – swapped with Brett Montgomery

Not to mention all our other recruiting successes :(

OMG!

Good to see your mate left off Patrick Bowden, I guess it would've weakened his point.

You do realise that Terry Wallace spent five years pointing out that our recruiting in the five years before he got to the club left him in a mess?

Say what you like about Wallace but the group of young players that he leaves behind is far superior to the group of young players that he inherited.

And the group he left at the Bulldogs has formed the nucleus of a very good team.

And they should be a lot better with the number of early draft picks we have had. Imagine how good it would have been if his ego didn't drive him to trade picks away.

The day in November is the second most important day (behind GF day) for any club. This just underlines where we have failed in the past. If recruitment is done right, any team can virtually coach itself to a Premiership. Our focus has been to look at our coach at a post-match press conference. Perhaps our recruiters are asked to sit next to the coach after a game from now on.
:clap

Spot on.

Atleast Wallet's crap coaching got us Cotchin aswell.

Which goes to show how long it is going to take to try to fix it. How many good players have we got since then and then double the amount of time from after this season due to the new teams that will be up and running before we know it.

I know the Footscray recruiting team.
A few of them have been there for 20 odd years.
Wouldn't matter to them who was coach.
They know exactly what they want, and they don't deviate from it.

Unfortanately at Tigerland, we've spent most of the last 20 years either running down our infrastructure or not having one at all.

Fortunately, since 2006, we've built up a decent and competitive recruiting structure.
If we can hold onto it, instead of tearing it down, we might see the fruit that other clubs get.

I know our drafting has been sh$t over the years--but that 1999 draft by the dogs is "one out of the box"-arguably the best by a club ever--find a better one!! In 2000 the dogs drafted

10--Jordan Mcmahon
26 Shane Birss
56 Daniel Cross
70 Wayde Skipper

I presume it was the same selection personel as 1999

Just shows how unpredictive outcomes be

Absolutely spot on Phantom.
Get the recruiting structure up and running properly and the biggest job in football is covered.
Player development and coaching is just the polishing process of the nuggets you find.
If you find diamond and gold nuggets you end up with something of value with a bit of polishing.
If you find barkers nuggets you can polish all you like, you will still end up with *smile*.
