Yep, got it here now, for those who are interested:

P.Bourke, R.Schober, A.Smith
Grimmond, Hogg, Gust
S.Clark, C.Smith, R.Jackson
Matthewson, Lee, Cross, M.McLeod

1987
Laughton, P.Morrish, C.Elliott
P.Barlow, Allison, T.Elliott
Hounihan, T.Free, S.Ryan
M.Clark, Bennett, G.Hamilton
Gibbons, S.Goosey (of Legends fame), Ingram
M.McLeod, Lambert, T.Nichols
Stockdale, Kind, J.Young

1989

S.Maxfield, S.Ryan, C.Young
Raggatt, Steenholdt, G.Edwards
A.Pickering, S.Bowden, R.Elliott
James, Rice, Flight
Francis, Cochrane, Kalms
Esler, Lindsay, Lodge

I believe that all the players I highlighted played Senior footy.

There was a kid called Knights that played in the U-19s who did a bit in the seniors, and Prescott also made it (not all who play in a season get to play in Premiership side......).

I also seem to recall one of the Elliotts ended up playing for another club (Fitzroy or St.Kilda?), and Brett Hartin may have played for North (reserves certainly).

Brett Hartin played in 91 and was not part of the "Searl era".  I think you may be confusing Elliott for Jamie Elliott who went from Fitzroy to Richmond to St Kilda. And Knighter played 1 game (I think in 87 ) for the under 19's before going to the Magoos and on to the seniors.

3 good players out of that lot.unfortunately 2 of them we lost to other clubs maxfield to sydney and lambert to bris and the other free had his career cut short thru injury.actually i had a lot of time for john klug as a player as well. he was just a late bloomer i saw him play senior footy for glenorchy in the tfl at 16 and he really did look a player.

I understand your point, Claw.
The way I see it is that Searl managed to deliver a fairly good number of boys into the senior squad who were ready to play first year senior footy. The fact that most of these first year senior footballers didn't develop into top class senior players, I believe, had more to do with their senior, rather than their junior, development.

I know C young was the brother of NBarry Young but is the other Young a third bother? C YOUng looked the goods but alas never kicked on. Eventually traded to West COast I think.

as for dennis pagan...if essendon hadn't had a brain explosion in the 99 preliminary final; pagan would have 1 flag to his name because carey played in the team.

he'll be lucky if history remembers him as anything more than another Robert Walls.

Sorry, but Corey Young was not related to Barry Young.

True DDT, but if North didn't leave the door ajar in the 98 GF Pagan still would have faired well. North should have closed the deal by half time but blew it. But maybe that is what I am saying, Searl was as good as Pagan and if it wasn't for the likes of his alleged conflict with Vickers and his (Searls') protectionist stance on the Under 19s - things could have been different.

If you speak to many players that played under him (Searl), they will say that he should have gone all the way but was obstructed by other people within the club who had different agendas (vickers being one) - fancy that going on at Tigerland.

Given the introduction of the draft in the late 80's, and the fact that almost all the Victorian clubs saw their U-19 teams as an unnecessary burden (and most treated them accordingly, with encouragement from the AFL), it would have been tough for Richmond to do much more than they did - given our parlous financial state at the time.

Searl could have kicked on, but he needed to get a Reserves job somewhere and Tigerland wasn't the place for it, and he obviously missed out elsewhere.
