Watching the Freo Saints game tonight one of the players ran to far and was pinged by the umpire. The umpire called the infringement as "travel". Does this mean that the game is now adopting the rules of Basket ball. With one of the infringment paid to Cousin of Jack for hands in the back one starts to wonder. ;D

Travel? It's called too far in Australian football isn't it?

BTW when I was a kid we were taught that even if you were stationary, you had to bounce the footy regularly. I've never checked that. Does anybody know?

15.2.2 Remaining in Possession and Bouncing the Football
(a) A Player may remain in possession of the football for any
length of time:
(i) unless the Player is Correctly Tackled by an opponent; or
(ii) unless directed to dispose of the football by a field
Umpire; or
(iii) provided the Player complies with Law 15.2.2 (b).
(b) Where a Player is moving whilst in possession of the football,
he or she must bounce or touch the football on the ground
at least once every 15 metres, irrespective of whether such
Player is running in a straight line or otherwise. For the
purposes of this Law, a Player shall be deemed to be in
possession of the football during the period when the Player
handballs the football to himself or herself and regains
possession without the football touching the ground.
(c) A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player if he
or she is of the opinion that a Player has contravened Law
15.2.2 (b).

You do not have to bounce the ball unless you travel more than 15 metres. Mind you if you travel 7 metres forward then 8 metres back without bouncing then it is a free kick-despite the fact that the ball is only one metre from its starting position.

Someone should have told Ray Hall before the Freo game last year. :P

Players run much further than 15metres all the time. I don't mind players running a bit further than 15, it is exciting to see a player sprint through the middle of the ground, but by rights really the rule should change from 15 metres to something that is more representative of real life.

Thanks, Tambling Man.

Agree, GO. It's wrong to have a rule that is not enforced. Rules committee should look at this one. Maybe it should be fifteen paces.

Yeah, I think Umps adjudicate this based on paces taken, and a wide striding player can easily cover 15 metres in less than 15 paces. It's a tough call for umps without ground markers.
