will the afl let us accept our new sponsor

There's only one thing that would prevent the AFL accepting our new sponsor, and thats the current contract with Tabcorp. If the contract is water tight and conditions enforced by Tabcorp then the AFL may have no choice but to reject the Tiger's request.

Hi all, long time reader, first time poster.

On the topic of sponsors I find it hard to see how the AFL could possibly turn it down, but hey, they're choc-full of surprises aren't they..... ::)

Any news? Anyone know of when the decision will be made? We're nearly half way through Jan and still can't buy 2009 jumpers. What a joke. >:(

There's a bit at the bottom about us still looking for a sponsor.

With one year to go on the TabCorp sponsorship, tough global economic conditions and the possibility of Richmond not having a 2nd major sponsor, the AFL cannot reject this proposal. IMO. The AFL can afford to breach any of their contract conditions with TabCorp and should compensate them for that breach. Particularly if it will benefit a Melbourne based club.
This is a massive litmus test for the AFL and they will be opening pandoras box if this ends up costing our club a major sponsor. We'll see how well the AFL is looking after the interests of the Melbourne based clubs.

I'm afraid it will also open a pandoras box if they give it to us. So unfortunately I reckon we're stuffed.

Assuming of course that the AFL has a choice. If there's an exclusivity clause in their contract with TabCorp, and TabCorp don't want to lose their exclusivity... well, the rest isn't exactly rocket science.

Given the prevailing economic conditions and the number of clubs in severe financial strife, the fact the deal has not immediately been rubber-stamped by the AFL tells me that TabCorp are saying 'no dice'.

....which makes it even worse that a decision hasn't been made. If there is an exclusivity clause then it was there before christmas when the club first started negotiating the deal. Why drag it out. CLOWNS

Why don't TABcorp sponsor us then?

They'd get better exposure than they do now (I did not know they had contract with the AFL until I read the HUN's article).

Leysy may well be wrong, but he's not so sure its necesarilly the AFL holding things up.

Corporate Bookmakers are geniuses at generating free publicity. It could well have been sportsbet feeding us a bone to get some exposure.

Often these agreements are not black and white.

Some of the marketing agreements I have been subject to insist on exclusivity, but they have some wriggle room for arrangements that don't conflict. Its that wriggle room that often gets debated.

To make matters worse, Tabcorp is not the exclusive AFL gaming sponsor (they have one other - forget the name), so its not like they are "the" gaming sponsor of the AFL.

Last report I read was that the second sponsor has said we are sweet, its only Tabcorp that is dragging the chain. This may (may) indicate they are just trying to get some benefit from the AFL in agreeing to the arrangement, but thats my pure speculation (no inside word at all).
