The AFL has quitely announced new rule changes to our game (not the NAB cup, the premiership season)
*The days of full-forwards taking seemingly forever to kick for goal are over with all players to be given a maximum of 30 seconds to shoot from next season.
*stricter interpretation on the deliberate out of bounds rule with players to be penalised even if they kick the ball forward and gain ground before it goes out of play, if such a kick is ruled deliberate by the umpires.
*reduced tolerance for holding players up after a mark or a free kick, which results in a 50 metre penalty against the offending team with field umpires also to be told to take less time in deciding to award and then measure out the 50 metre penalty.
*boundary umpires to throw the ball in quicker.
*stricter policing of holding and blocking in marking contests.
*and a greater focus on detecting infringements by taggers
*backmen not having to wait for the goal umpire to finish waving the flag signalling a behind to kick out
To sum these changes up the AFL want the game sped up.
If you get dizzy watching the bench when rotations start wait till next year when players come off hurling their guts up because they literally can't hack the pace!
Therefore is TW on the right track?
He is clearly aiming our list at fast, skillfull players like lids, meyer, bling, j.o.n, etc.
There will always be a place for kpp and ruckmen, but slowly but surely the rest of the positions on the ground have been encapsulated into "midfielders". Already players from all over the ground are rotated through the midfield. These new rules will require just about all players to be "followers". If you can't run fast and can't kick well at full tilt then forget it you won't cut the mustard.
The hawks have gone down the road of drafting mainly for KPP's, but if they can't run like Buddy Franklin what good will they be in a competition where only the quick will survive?
In the last 3 years our game has changed more than it has for a long, long time.
