Very disappointing indeed ToO, saw all of those Gold medals live so naturally enough her performance was a highlight of the olympics so sad to rwad that.
Hopefully like another great sport Cycling, Athletics may be getting its act together.

Hopefully knighter but it's a long road back.

Whilst world records like Flo Jo's still stand there's a constant reminder of the cheats.

Athletics is between a rock and a hard place because it's mainly newsworthy whilst records are being broken.
Unfortunately that's unlikely to happen if the sport is completely clean because most of the records are held by drug users.
News like today's only damages the sport further. No one believes anyone who does well is clean.

It's a sh!thouse situation really..

Hopefully they have the power to strip her of her records although she has come clean she has never tested postive. They did though strip Ben Johnson of his world record 12 months after the event when he was caught in Seoul and Justin Gaitlin was stripped of his world record after he caught about 2-3 months later i think.

Marion Jones looks like be asked to hand back her medals which would mean the following distribution.

ATHLETES who will benefit if Marion Jones's five medals from the Sydney Olympics are re-awarded:

____________________________
Silver: Ekaterini Thanou, Greece, 11.12.
Bronze: Tanya Lawrence, Jamaica, 11.18.
4. Merlene Ottey, Jamaica, 11.19.

200m
Gold: Marion Jones, USA, 21.84.
__________________________________
Silver: Pauline Davis-Thompson, Bahamas, 22.27.
Bronze: Susanthika Jayasinghe, Sri Lanka, 22.28.
4. Beverly McDonald, Jamaica, 22.35.

4x400m relay
Gold: United States (Jearl Miles-Clark, Monique Hennagan, Marion Jones, La Tasha Colander-Richardson): 3:22.62.
________________________________________________________________________
Silver Jamaica (Sandie Richards, Catherine Scott-Pomales, Deon Hemmings, Lorraine Graham): 3:23.25.
Bronze: Russia (Yulia Sotnikova, Svetlana Gontcharenko, Olga Kotlyarova, Irina Privalova): 3:23.46.
4. Nigeria (Olabisi Afolabi, Charity Opara, Rosemary Okafor, Falilat Ogunkoya): 3:23.80.

Long jump
Gold: Heike Drechsler, Germany (6.99)
Silver: Fiona May, Italy (6.92)
Bronze: Marion Jones, USA (6.92)
_______________________________
4. Tatiana Kotova, Russia (6.83)

4x100m relay
Gold: Bahamas (Sevatheda Fynes, Chandra Sturrup, Pauline Davis-Thompson, Debbie Ferguson): 41.95.
Silver: Jamaica (Tanya Lawrence, Veronica Campbell, Beverly McDonald, Merlene Ottey): 42.13.
Bronze: United States (Chryste Gaines, Torri Edwards, Nanceen Perry, Marion Jones): 42.20.
_______________________________________________________________
4. France (Linda Ferga, Muriel Hurtis, Fabe Dia, Christine Arron): 42.42.

In the women 100m Thanou had some problems in Greece and never ran as she was suspected after a supposldy motorbike crash after trying to dodge drug testers. If they can pin something on Lawrence as well, Merlene Ottey might win her first gold medal at the Olympics 27 years after first competiting.

Marion Jones gets six months jail!

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23041603-2,00.html

Fair enough too IMO as it basically equates to fraud.
She would have earned plenty of dough under false pretenses and has made a mockery of the numerous competitions she has entered and athletes she has raced against.

Suck eggs.

That'll hopefully make a few think about cheating.

for Perjury wasn't it ToO. Thought seemed harsh at the time but it is for lying under oath not for drug taking.
Good time to do it 8 months out from the Olympics.

Correct mk. Hadn't read the article thoroughly.
Some fall from grace for Jones on top of drugs ban, handing back her medals & her records being erased.
Also lost her fortune due to legal battles it seems.

I got up and watched it.

Amazing! Would have to be the one of the most amazing sporting talents of our time. If we goes sub 9.50 it may never be beaten again.

Staggering when you think back 20 years ago to when Ben Johnson (pumped to the eyeballs on roids) broke the then WR to post 9.79.

Bolt is over .2 of a second faster now.

If Usain's indeed clean, he's a freak.

His height is what leads me to not question his times, he's able to combine the long stride with the extremely fast action of the shorter sprinters. He will lead to a revolution in the event because sprinters will have to be of that type to compete.

it would be nice when the day comes that we can just admire in awe whenever a new record is set, and not have our doubts. Cheats have a lot to answer for.

Anyone watching the World Champs? Fantastic event. The men's 10,000m and 1500m the highlights for me so far, although Aussie girl Eleanor Patterson just won high jump gold.
