Had a look at this footy documentary during the week, based on Footscray 1996 season if people are not familar. The relevance to Tigerland is that it is Terry Wallace first year as a coach.
Some observations from it
Alan Joyce started the year as coach, but offered his resignation after Round 2 and then resigned after Round 12. Joyce won two premierships at Hawthorn before being sacked and looking at this you may see why as he struggles with an ordinary team. I know its limited footage they show but when he talks its all about how he cannot help them on the field and nothing else.
Johno and Westy looked very young. Libba seemed the only upset one with the loses and Steve wallis and Osborne were expressing reservations about the coach after Round 2.
Doggies got flogged in the first two games by 95 and 132 points but beat Fitzroy (their last AFL year) the next week and Plough who was ass coach is positive that they can still make the 8.
Players Executive led by Wallis and Osborne would not give Joyce a vote of confidence after Round 12 and this was told to him as well bythe football divison led by Terry Wallace.
Plough appointed coach after Round 12, Gary O'Sullivan said he was not responsible and Danny Southern thought there was some backstabbing. Intereseting as Southern called for Wallace to resign as coach when he was on Channel 7 panel in 2001/02.
Plough first game as coach they were down to Collingwood 8.3 to 1.1 after 1st quarter. Plough said for remainder of match needed to break down into stages to get back (2nd quarter was 5 goals to2). Doggies lost by a goal in the end. Walking off Plough said to his assistant "I'm going to stick it right up them". Will write what he says afterwards.
Richmond have had 5 key bulldogs in the football department since, Gary O'Sullivan, Alan Joyce, Terry wallace, Brian Royal and Gordon Casey.
Libba says he only has 2 years left in him but plays 5.
Rick Kennedy speaks wellat Steve Wallis last game. Did he end up as Bulldog director. Can see why he captained the club.
In the last game against Bombers, Rohan Smith is crunced and winded, he was coming off the ground until Plough says "Tell him to stay on the ground he has six months to get over it"
This is Plough speech after his first game as coach.
"I dont know about you blokes but i cant bear losing a game like that, look fantastic effort but what does a fantastic effort mean, it does not mean anything(veins sticks out bangs the white board). We dont get didldy swipe, we dont get a point, they dont give you something for getting close, it means nothing. If you think I am going to be happy walking into this room when we get beaten still, we cant be, we can't just accept it. I dont know about you guys but if I see one bloke walk out of here and get a pat on the backfrom people out their for a good effort, I'll spew up, because it is just not acceptable. We were rabble in that first quarter absoultly bloody disgraceful, absoulty disgraceful. Yeah three quarteres we worked our areses off, we worked our backsides off to get back in the games. The game is about 120 minutes of footy and that was the most winable game we have had for a long time and we pissed it down the drain, we absoultly pissed that game down the drain. Don't anyone forget about it. Take away one thing from this game, you have the ability to play in this competition and play it very, very, very, very well. We cant go from that what we displayed for 3 quarters back to what we displayed in the first quarter ever again, ever again. Have your showers and see you back at the social club"
Plough finished that speech positive after the initial blast.
I wonder if he is still like that and whether the game against St Kilda was like that speech where we missed 4 points against a good side.
