wanted to pose the question to the many suffering supporters and im guessing this kind of topic has been discussed in the last 24 hours but wanted to put my 2 cents in as well and the question is you become the coach, what would they change on field at tigerland?

on field i would make the hard calls with the obvious impending gold coast ravaging the draft from 2010 it would be good to get some nice early draft picks, following should take place over 3/4 years

Defenders:
Keep: McGuane, Moore, Newman, Polo, Thursfield.
Develop: Post, Rance.
Delist / Retire: Bowden, King, Polak
Trade: McMahon, Raines (Possible gold coast trade),

Midfielders:
Keep: Connors, Cotchin, Coughlan, Cousins, Deledio, Foley, Thompson, White
Develop: Collins, Hislop
Delist / Retire: Johnson, Tuck, Jackson
Trade: Edwards

Ruckman:
Keep: Pattison
Develop: Vickery, Putt, Browne
Delist / Retire: Graham
Trade: Simmonds

Forwards:
Keep: Morton, JON, Riewoldt, Tambling (play him as a crumber thats what he was drafted for)
Develop: Nahas, Gourdis
Delist / Retire: Brown, Hughes, Polak, Richardson, Schulz
Trade: Pettifer

Draft Needs

the next few drafts KPP's are a must especially up forward were we will be very light for target options.

would be very interested to see what the richmond faithful have as there changes at tigerland

COME ON YOU TIGERS!

Welcome.

I'm not attacking your post - much of it (all of it?) is an excellent appraisal.

However I wish to make one change.

Richo retires when he wants to - HE HAS EARN'T THAT RIGHT :clap

I don't care what people think about chewing out coaches - BUT - how we treat our champions is a totally different matter.

FFS - people get all upset about retrenched immigrant Pacific Brand workers - but they're happy to throw Richo out on his ear.

NEVER!

Richo gose out on his OWN TERMS
other than that welcome to Punt Road, where the suffering never stops

No clubs will trade for McMahon, Raines, Edwards, Pettifer or Simmonds.

The only players with trade value are keepers.

I used to agree that Richo deserves to retire when he is good and ready.

But someone mentioned Manchester Utd and how they constantly remain at the top and have no fear of cutting big names who have been with the club since their junior days. I can't help but think that there is merit to Sir Alex's methods. I think the RFC to start to do the same, but maybe after Richo has retired.

I mentioned Manchester United...........Sir Alex does not risk Giggs & Scholes in unecessary games......denoting he would of taken cousins and richo off at 3/4 time round 1......................And he turns over the stars and sells them for $$$$$ but this only happens when he has a ready replacement.........KEY note retire richo to make Jack #1..your joking right??

If i was drafted as coach:

i would only keep campbell Mcrae and Vickery, sack the rest, including medics.
I try hire Matt Primus, Damian HArdwick(with view to top job 2010), Steve Silvanghi with Sheeds/Bartlett advising. hire the best available sports doctors and medical professionals
Play on at all costs, if you cant tackle you cant play, Kick to position, Kick long...run and carry, then carry and run till you throw up..gut run or go to coburg...MAN TO MAN marking toughness and pace will break the rolling cluster.

Brown, bowden, King, petifer, mcmuppet, polak, jonno and shulz go straight to Coburg and never return thank you for your services....then place the remainder of the list on one chance notice....PLAY FOR THE JUMPER, LOVE THE JUMPER, LOVE YOUR TEAM MATE DIE FOR THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE RFC....if you dont want to thanks thats ok....delisted....there are 500 other kids every year that miss out that would do anything to wear the yellow and black...that would do anything to in their power to give 500% at training and on game day, to ensure the team and the TEAM FIRST wins or dies trying.

Ready or not....Gourdis, Vickery, Post, putt, thomson, collins and connors will be tried week in and week out in positions suited and not
Foley deledio cotchin tambling cogs/hislop/tommo on ball all day every week rested only by injury
Hughes and Patto persisted at key position for the entire year if not good trade off or delist
Richo to play 300 afl games and beyond as long as he remains effective.
Cousins to play as much as he can and advise skill and midfield experience when he cant.
Forward line to be big and tall with nahas, edwards, tambling, white rotating on form.
Backline to play big and tough defend FIRST, when in doubt kick it out and long...leave the rebound 50 to midfield gut runners.

Or something very close to this........

Welcome to PRE Whutiger - like your forthright attitude.

Feel there needs to be more consideration on the midfield - that is where the modern game is won (or lost)

Foundations of the midfield come from grunt players - the in & under merchants - Tuck IMO does a great job in this area - we need some plan/method to farm the ball from his tough work out to our runners. e.g. I am holidaying in Sydney at the moment and a good friend called with tickets to see the Swans Carlton game last Saturday - I watched with interest how the much vaunted Carlton midfield worked - and in particular how Judd organised it. In the 1st term Judd was explosive (but the Blues could not kick straight). Terms 2 and 3 Judd was kept quiet by McVeigh of all players - but a closer look saw that Judd's feeders were cut off by the Swans in & under gutsy players - like Kirk and Bolton - all of a sudden the ball was not being hand passed about by Carlton with players like Murphy Gibbs and Judd running angles across the back of packs to create the loose midfielder - because they were being starved of the ball.

From your outline above I would retire Johnson but would persist with the rest Jackson and Edwards included - why? Because Jackson IMO is a deadset HBF has the height the necessary speed and the big body - he will make any forward earn their kicks. Edwards needs to put beef on granted but he is being played in a game plan that does not suit his style - with good in and under feeders he could well develop into a very capable 2nd/3rd tier midfielder injected into the midfield from the forward pocket or bench.

Ruckman give you first use of the ball and young Graham did that significantly on Sunday - his around the ground work needs improvement but at his age he is a big bodied lad worth persisting with. Again IMO.

The real issue is the game plan these players are being asked to play and the lack of system in our midfield. Watching Carlton live in that 1st quarter and Geelong on Foxtel shows how a midfield should work together - I honestly do not think ours has been drilled in such a manner. For heavens sake our midfield coach Campbell never played in a midfield that worked cohesively - how then can he coach it?

Agree with you we need a CHF - a good/great CHF straightens a team up and provides a target all day which is an alternative to a usually closely watched full forward. Plus the two should be interchangeable - like Franklin and Roughead at Hawthorn.

My thoughts anyway and I am sure someone who has a better footy brain than mine will cut this to shreads - but I still think I am heading in the right direction..........RT

i disagree if i was the new coach i would want to sweep away all of the remnants of the last 15 yrs of abject mediocrity and start totally afresh.

COME ON YOU TIGERS!

IMO it would be the worst thing we can do is worry about the GC and their picks, and use it as an excuse not to clean house. So they have every second pick or whatever. We will still get low draft picks. Much more important to get rid of these underperformers.

Love the post. Couldnt disagree with any of it.

Welcome to PRE

Good post.

I'd persist with Hughes, trade/get rid of Tambling and JON.

Richo stays and retires when ready, and Cousins to retire after next year.

well, for starters I’d run a sword through half of them to promote new blood. Then pre-match I’d gather all the survivors into a close circle, real tight like a team, clear the room of all the hangers-on, and then looking each one of those good hearts in the eye I’d ask (in a tone not unlike Stanley Baker’s in Zulu):

does Superman wear blue tights
and keep away from kryptonite
do old ladies get mugged at night
are you the business

Do workers want a living wage
do rock stars lie about their age
would a tiger run from an open cage
are you the business

are you the f#*k off business
is my first name John
is strangeways full of prisoners
am I over twenty-one

are the royal family really rich
is scooby-do one son-of-a *smile*
is wembley stadium a football pitch
are you the business

did Noriega knock out coke
did Bob Marley like the odd smoke
was Jesus Christ a decent bloke
are you the business

does Oliver Reed ever get pissed
can Chubby Checker do the twist
was Karl Marx a communist
are you the business

was James Dean a cool cat
was Kennedy a democrat
do Hacedic men wear hats
are you the business

will narcotics get you hooked
did Dostoyevsky write the odd book
was Al Capone a bit of a crook
are you the business

did Buddy Holly wear horn-rimmed specs
is czechoslovakia full of czechs
did Sigmund Freud consider sex
are you the business

did Elvis ever rock 'n roll
did James Brown have any soul
will I touch you with a ten-foot barge pole
are you the business

I'd then wish them good luck!

hmm if iwere to take over tomorrow and we had a full list to pick from.

b/ rance thursfield tambling/newman/foley
hb deledio schulz/mcguane moore
c/ collins hislop/coughlan cotchin
hf post riewoldt morton
f connors richo/hughes nahas/gilligan
r/ browne thomson/tuck cousins
int pattison/putt/ vickery.

emg white polo edwards gilligan jon gourdis.

no more bowden brown graham jackson johnson king mcmahon pettifer polak raines simmonds would like to add schulz pattison and one or two others but for structures sake they have to stay.its a start anyway.
get some big bodies height and structure around the kids we are going to play.

As much as I admire Richo he along with Johnson, Simmonds, Cousins, Bowden, Brown would be gone although Richo would be given the chance to retire though. JON, Schulz, King, Pettifer and McMahon would either be traded or delisted. Coughlan would have to make an impact to stay and Polak would also have to have positive reports. Tuck would be offered for trade and any other offers would not necessarily be dismissed though that doesn't mean they will be accepted either.

Pre-season would be spent in the gym building up bodies there are to many skinny players that should be bigger by now. Skills would also be a priority and would get heavily involved with Storm to teach tackling which with the bigger bodies they should improve in that area.

Schulz...I think McGuane has him covered and although he did perform almost adequately when played down back last year his efforts this year have left me disillusioned.

Pattison...if Graham gets a season as the 2nd ruck/starting ruck he will go past whatever Pattison's best has ever been - he is better equipped physically for the position

Other than that I agree wholeheartedly - imagine if the club supported this type of startegy for the rest of the year :)

BTW, I think we would actually win more games with this lineup than persisting with the Browns/Bowdens/McMahon/Jackson/King/Raines combo's

These are some of things I would do if asked;

My initial hit list is as follows; I would advise all these players thanks for your services but you will not be playing any senior football anymore.

Troy Simmonds
Nathan Brown
Kane Johnson
Jake King
Richard Tambling
Graham Polak
Kane Pettifer
JON
Shultz

Secondly I would bring in some skills coaches to practise kicking each week till end of season. 2 one hour season with passing & kicking for goal.
Brian Talyor & Doug Hawkins two people I would target.

Richo & Bowden would sit down & ask their expectations. Advise they have been good servants of the club but wish them to help develope players and educate them on the field. If they stop having an impact they will be dropped. Also couldn't see their services beyond next year but to be reviewed.

Cousins, persist with him mentoring & training the young players in the midfield. Grooming him for a midfield coaching role - includes fitness & expectations from all players.

Sheedy, introuduce him as putting all players through historical lessons on the club throughout the year with tests. Players who continue to fail will not be selected to play for the seniors.

I would seek out Kerr if available to get to the club, no other player within the league is worth chasing. (Trade Bait - Tambling, Edwards & Shultz - see what happens)

Play no favourites and players chosing on performance to play the seniors football. No exceptions

Tuck and raines would have a bit of value

people will attack me for saying this but if i was put coach id trade delideo this year for a top 10 pick and a player, delideo is has mental weak as anyone in the team,
