PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Have been thinking about this topic for a while. The constant criticism of Adam Pattison here on PRE made me wonder where he was placed in regard to the other young ruckmen in the league. .

I am often a little bemused by the use of terms like deficiencies. It assumes that what you have now is the finished product. I would argue that everything besides height can be improved on.

So I have compiled a list of the other young ruckmen in the league. I have not included anyone who is not either paying now or a realistic chance of playing in the near future.

Name Height Weight Age

Graham 200 96 21
Pattison 197 99 22

Leunberger 203 98 20

Griffin 202 97 22
Tippett 201 100 21
Moran 199 99 21
Maric 198 102 22

Wood 204 105 21

Minson 199 105 23

Blake 200 101 22
Mumford 200 102 22

Meeson 200 97 22
Martin 198 97 21

Cloke 196 103 23
Hampson 201 97 20
Kreuzer 200 97 19

Laycock 201 105 23

Warnock 206 94 21

Bailey 206 104 21
Renouf 200 97 20

Deluca 203 99 21

Goldstein 201 105 20

That gives us twenty two blokes to compare. So out of the above list who are going to become the premier ruckman over the next decade? Also who of the above do not have some sort of weakness in their game?

Who are the best ruckmen at present? I would say the following are the top five. (In no order)

Ottens 202 108 28
Cox 204 104 27
Hudson 199 108 29
Jolly 200 105 26
Hill 201 109 27

I reckon these guys are the elite. They have the size to play in what shoud be the most physical position on the ground. I probably should declare my bias to big aggressive ruckmen. I have posted before on what I think of guys like Josh Fraser and Jeff White. Both would do well in synchronised swimming. Graceful, skilled. Who cares.
It's the big guys who compete who are the best bet in September.

From the best at the moment two things should be noted. They are all over twenty six years of age and also notably heavier than the younger guys. So is it height or power that is the most important attribute? Or is it something else?

I have not seen enough of all the younger guys to make a certain call on who will become elite but I have seen enough of Patto to know he is not out of place on that list.
