You've got 5 picks in the 2008 National Draft, what positional type of player ..

THink this years draft is pretty easy for us

picks 1,2,18,34,50,66
Recycled players pick 1
Rookie draft pick 1,17,33,49

1 and 2 will be Rich and Natuiani (SP?) after that i suspect it will be pretty easy also (people who can kick and can get the ball)

Anything at this stage will be an improvement

Probably a new coach as well from the look of things

A tall ruckman with skills
An inside mid with skills
A key forward with skills
A key back with skills
And another key forward or back with skills.

The key is they must have skills to reduce turnovers
They must be real hard footballer types and not athletes who may be able to play (rookie the athletes)
No flankers, no trading early picks at all, no trading for players struggling to get into another team, no small backman or forwards. We need KEY position players mainly.
Don't draft anyone that Wallace wants!!! Actually he won't be there hopefully!

The big thing is going to be who we take after we get two of Hurley/Rich/Nicholas N/player to explode durring the under 18's.

We need inside the centre square footballers. We need to find a Tom Hislop/Jordna Lewsi/Nathan Jones type.
Strong bodies who may only need another 6-8kgs to have a ALF body. Not 12-16kgs. Big bodies.

Scot Selwood types, not to put salt into the wounds but he is the type we lack.

Basically we need everything but we need mature bodies who can handle in tight work.

Ruckman & KPP

midfield looks good for the future (despite what others might say)

Connors, Cotchin, Foley, Edwards, King, Newman, Tambling (please) can all win their own footy and will only get better.

connors, King and Newman ??? would have played about 3 quarters on the ball between them in their careeers. we are not pinning the mid-field future on them are we..?

Look 1 and 2 would be good in regard to the future but im more interested in upgrading 18 if possible in fact with a strong draft the Tigers would be best advised to do all they could to obtain such an outcome especially if this scenario eventuates.

We need more than 5 picks, with Miller there even if we had the first 10 picks he would stuff it up !!

As i keep saying. anyone who is 170 to 190cms who has never played midfield due to

- being to young
- or not being good enough
- or never been tried

Is listed as the saviours of the midfield. Players rarely change their nature. They can improve facets of their game and turn a weakness into something solid but rarely can go from an outside flanker into a hard nosed clearance king. Lenny Hayes was soft when he started and turned into a machine. But its very very rare. Most centre square players show it almost right away. They may need a year or 2 to get bigger and fitter and adjust to the speed but show more than glimpes almost right away that they understand traffic and how to read ruckmen and have awareness about themselves and their teamates and the opposition.

So players like Newman can won clearances if they are played in the centre square. but its all about the quanatity and quality of them up against other midfields that I am talking about. For his age and experience and size he has never really shown he is good at 1 on 1 contested football. Just lacks the ability to win it consistently in tight and is a free running, skilled and long kicking ball carrier who works off his man from half back. Now you can move that type onto the wing and play him further up but if he has to play in the centre square regularly up against AFL starting midfields then i think he wont cut it. He would need a drastic change in style and its very unlikely. That does not mean you dont try something. Its just being realistic its unlikely to be successful.

How about keep all the picks you get. Regardless of where they are. Just try and keep them and use the draft. That would be a pretty decent start before it comes down to the actual junior players to pick.

Since this draft is pretty strong maybe a good idea not to trade down like happened in 2006 or trade out of the top 30 like happened in 2001 when the draft from 1 to 32 did not include Richmond.

Then let Cameron do his work and he will pick some pretty decent types I would have thought.
