Williamson was unlucky, however reading between the lines, you are indicating it was a massive impact. My point is the outcome is simple, score 300 against NZ and they won't chase it down. Having Williamson at 3 and Taylor at 4 sucks way too many deliveries and forces the rest to chase the game. If Guptil was in form it may paper over that fact, but whilst Williamson is a good batsmen, he can't play the same role of a Root, Kohli or Smith as he doesn't generally have the dynamism of the batsmen around him so therefore the run rate slows too much.
Just check out his strike rate, his average is great but the strike rate is either because their openers are rubbish and he constantly rebuilds (a bit of that, but Guptils not rubbish just out of form) or he doesn't have the acceleration.
Root - 500 runs, 62.5 average (1 not outs), strike rate 91.74, 9 innings, 5 scores over 50, 2 of them over 100, score over 50 56% of the time
Kohil - 408 runs, 58.3 average (no not outs), strike rate 96.22, 7 innings, 5 scores over 50, no centuries, score over 50 78% of the time
Smith - 287 runs, 35.9 average (no not outs), strike rate 90.82, 8 innings, 3 scores over 50, no centuries, score over 50 38% of the time
Williamson - 481 runs, 96.2 average (2 not outs), strike rate 77.2, 7 innings, 3 scores over 50, 2 centuries, score over 50 43% of the time
Whilst Williamson is a good bat, and a very good one at test match level unless he's got some massive hitters around him, you'd fancy beating them if you scored over 280 every single time. Their whole game plan is for Boult and Ferguson to get you out cheaply, don't do that and they won't win.

No i think with the pitch playing fairly slow England would have won. Williamson has the ability to bat through, so if he could have got someone else to stay with him they would've got a lot closer.
yep, they eased up. Tactical, cynical ploy to make Pakistan's path harder & perhaps avoid Australia too..Surprised not much made of this by the media...Hope it bites & they have to play England again in the semis....Guaranteed if we beat Sth Africa tomorrow.
Really? The only one that seemed to ease through was Dhoni and by then the game was practically lost anyway. Did you see Pandya batting, he wasn't slowing it down for the loss. Strange comment.
Perhaps, but I think they have it all wrong. If you go through the top 20 odd highest run scorers in the world cup, 2 of the 3 lowest strike rate batsmen are Williamson and Taylor who are 3 and 4 for NZ. They are the only team to bring in 2 slower scorers straight after each other.
I'd be licking my lips at playing them in the semis.
It's marginal, Steve Smith and Khawaja's strike rate is no better than Williamson and Taylor's. Guptill having a poor World Cup hasn't helped the Kiwis.
Depends how far you are looking. In the world cup they are both well above Taylor and Williamson who are both in the mid 70's. Khawaja is over 86 and Smith is in the 90's.

Call me a cynic but right or wrong the organizers wanted an England v India final and if we had won that game then that was impossible because they'd have met in a semi.
Our middle order - Stoinis and No Show simply aren't up to it. Stoinis more so but teams are bringing pace on as soon as Maxwell comes to the crease and he is repeatedly failing.

If these 2 stay much longer, they will barely score above 200. Slow pitch or not, India will chase that comfortably. I'm not sure their bowling attack is really setup for a slow pitch like this either (NZ's), need good spin (don't have that) and lots of variations from your seamers (again now sure they have that), that's why Bumrah has been so good today, heaps of variation to his bowling.
