"His arms reached up like a giant pair of testicles!"

I always hate seeing this attributed to Jack, because he never actually said it. Sam Newman did at a sportsman’s night where he was taking off jack, and because it sounded like such a Dyerism people thought he really did say it.
One of my favourite Jack commentary moments was when we beat Melbourne one year and Jack was going to win his bet with Paul Cronin. He went right off. Ian Major tried to calm him down by saying that he may be upsetting some of their Melbourne supporting listeners to which Jack gleefully crowed ‘I don’t care!’

When Jack was coaching Richmond he told the players to "go over there and pair up in threes".

Is that right? Didn’t know that

But it’s as funny as so I’m glad it’s attributed to him as it adds to his legend.

I doubt the truthfulness of this anecdote because I have never heard it anywhere else, but it's true inasmuch as it's what I read ....

Back in the early 1980s I was sitting alone in the cafeteria at Melbourne Uni reading the student rag Farrago. In those days, it was seriously left-ist anarchist and you would never normally read anything about football in it. But an article about Jack Dyer caught my eye. I seem to remember the whole article was a bit unhinged and not filled with anything about his footballing achievements. It was all about what an odd character he was. The article finished with a paragraph like this (trying to remember here - this is almost 40 years ago) ...

'After all, anyone who once got fired from a radio commentary job for saying "and he's streaming down the field, he's bounced it once, he's bounced it twice ... and ... OH, what a c*** of a kick" can't be all that bad a bloke.'

I was laughing so hard I couldn't get my lunch down.

I really hope it's true.

Jack was a smart and funny man - I think some of his verbal "mistakes" were well-thought out in advance.

He also said one time that he held the record for the longest kick in the history of Australian football.
He was playing at Glenferrie oval and he kicked the ball out of bounds and it landed on the roof of the 3.15 train to Belgrave

One of my great recollections of Jack was on World Of Sport, when the woodchopping segment was on.
The recorded voice of the late woodchopping legend Jack O'Toole was used to signal for the woodchoppers to get ready steady go.
After the segment Jack Dyer said something like.."it's great to hear Jack O'Toole's voice, I haven't seen him around of late".
Jack had to be told O'Toole had died 2 years previously and they'd been using his voice ever since.
My dad and I nearly coughed up our Sunday roast on that one.

I'm sure at one point he referred to someone as amphibious, as he could kick with either foot.

He got all flustered one afternoon and mispronounced the scoreboard sponsor who was Discount City as Disco City. He was a great commentator.

He also supposedly once said that a player had a good debut last week and was having an even better one this week.
