Easy for China to say, it's a decade before the UN requires them to reduce emissions. Meanwhile Australia is on track to meet the Paris agreement.

Zero net emissions by 2050 is not a thing. If the government is reluctant to commit to the proposition, it's probably because it will prove impossible.

And yet China is accellerating its move into renewables. Oil and gas consumption dipped in 2020, renewable energy production continued to grow at the same rate, largely because of China. And China is benefitting not just by using the technology but building and exporting it. Australia had a competitive advantage in renewables in the 90s, we squandered that through short-termism and suppression by the oil and gas lobby.

Through fudging carbon credits Australia may achieve the current Paris goals but we are still exporting coal and LNG thus making the world worse off.

Moving towards carbon neutrality is in fact a thing, and it's pretty much the US and Australia who are the last hold-outs. Companies - even O&G are taking this step by themselves. Banks are ceasing to invest in fossil fuels. State governments in Australia are rapidly moving towards more renewable - even Gladys is investing 32 billion.

The world is changing around you and you stubbornly insist on remaining in 1979.

China is responsible for 30% of all human emissions, and climbing.

Australia is on track without calling on carbon credits.

You're such a goddamn cheerleader.

But, but, but they're a "Developing Nation".
The poor souls.
Nuclear weapons up the ying yang, space programmes, global aggression.
We have to give them some leeway for being so poor and unfortunate.
It's only fair that we believe the BS the CCP propaganda machine comes out with

Cheerleader for who? Yeah, I'm a cheerleader for the climate. Reducing carbon emissions is good, and I like living on the planet, so it seems prudent to take care of it.

I've said many times the CCP is evil, but I don't have to resort to racism to make that point. I also see late capitalism as screwing the planet, and China is as capitalistic as anyone - probably more so.

Because I don't see the world as black and white, I'm ok to look at some things and say "yeah, when they do that it's bad."

Wow, why would one be anti ScoMo on climate?

Let's see, the world is warming, the impact is already being felt, it is a major threat to our way of life.

Australia is in a great position to be a clean energy powerhouse as we have the land, the sun, the wind, the tides etc to be making renewable energy and exporting it everywhere.

Yet ScoMo wants to subsidise gas and coal, wants to force the banks to finance gas and coal.

Gee, why would one be critical of ScoMo?

This country under the leadership of Chairman ScoMo can't even talk the talk let alone actually do anything positive.

Yeah and if we all p!ss together we can put out bushfires. The UN just wants to make us poor, they've said so plenty of times. And corona's done a fair job of that. We'll get there in our own good time. Don't need to be pushed into a one-size-fits-all pipedream.

Nice conspiracy there Lee, but no credibility.

We are the world's 2nd biggest exporter of coal, we're not some small fry pissing on a bushfire, we are a very big part of the problem.

2020 isn't over yet and there have been some reductions in emissions, but, as an article on Yale Climate Connections states:

As a result of restrictions taken to curb the coronavirus pandemic, carbon emissions to the atmosphere in 2020 declined by 9 to 10% in the U.S. and 6 to 7% globally, although some of those reductions were offset by carbon released by wildfires. Those are the largest annual carbon emissions declines since World War II and far more than the 1% global and 6% U.S. emissions drops brought about by the 2008 Great Recession.

Nevertheless, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels rose by 2.6 parts per million from 2019 to 414 ppm in 2020. The amount of carbon in the atmosphere will not decline until human emissions reach net zero. Moreover, as coronavirus restrictions were lifted during 2020, global carbon pollution nearly rebounded to pre-COVID levels.

Yep, we keep pumping carbon into the atmosphere, even at a reduced rate, the CO2 levels keep rising. Maybe a little slower, but still rising.

Full article here: https://yaleclimateconnections.org/...-and-climate-events-of-a-record-setting-year/

Looks like 2020 is likely to be a tie for the hottest year since we started measuring temperatures too, which makes the last 7 years, the 7 hottest on record.

Climate change is happening now, the impact is happening now - this will just get worse if we continue to dig up and burn fossil fuels.

China didn't seek a coal supply guarantee from us before they embarked on hundreds of new coal power stations. Russia has greater recoverable coal reserves than we do. They'll get it from somewhere.
..... and it will be significantly worse in quality that what we sell them.
Thus increasing pollution but China doesn't care about that.
We could stop mining and exporting coal tomorrow and the only results would be increased pollution and +50k Australians added to the unemployment queue.

Whatr we really should be doing is putting the brakes on population growth, for all sorts of reasons of which demand for coal is a minor one. But how to go about it?

"In modern usage, late capitalism often refers to a new mix of high-tech advances, the concentration of (speculative) financial capital, Post-Fordism, and a growing gap between rich and poor"

How late can late capitialism get? How is it different from just normal capitialism?
Good question. It was being used as far back as the early 20th century - some called it "latest stage capitalism" as opposed to "late stage capitalism".

Late stage capitalism is what we see now... large corporates that are multinational and in many ways more powerful than governments. Increasing wealth concentration at the top. Small businesses making way for the big. Massive wealth transfers in the digital space. transfer of manufacturing and some knowledge work to developing countries.

I'd also highlight rampant consumerism, breakdown of unions/ workers rights, and rapidly accelerating environmental destruction.
