2019 was a great year.Whatever we think the reason is the stats are clear. Our record on free kick differential since 2017 is as follows ( per AFL tables )
2017 469-528 18th in the league
2018 421-543 18th
2019 461-490 14th
2020 314-384 18th
2021 67-93 18th
This is a trend which surely deserves a conversation with the AFL.
As an aside if you watch the "sound the alarm" series where they had cameras in the coaches boxes during that prelim final when that happened straight away Dimma said " that's deliberate "Who was the umpire that paid deliberate against Hartlett in last years Prelim? Was it Matt Stevic?
No, you would have to go through the video yourself.Where do you find the individual umpires stats from a game? Is there a website that reports it all?

He's over in India giving Malcolm Speed a chop-out running the IPL....where's TBR to tell everyone it's all in our head?
In the early days I had refused a few matches due to knowing some of the players in a local team but once I went up in the ranks I never had the chance to ref a club I semi supported so the answer is no - fortunatelyI was also a referee for a while in the UK (lower level than you) and I know what you are saying, there is a lot that you get called, but bias is only shown when you have something in your mind to provide bias to. Did you ever referee a club that you were involved with from a playing / supporter base?
I think it’s probably credible; look how Scumwood is going this year.Sorry, must be a misprint, Collingwood negative on free kicks?
Simply not credible.

No net positive free kicks; no Scumwood!
Definitely no bias against Richmond....

if you overlay this data with premierships, there's a very strong inverse relationship between free kick differential and premierships
2017 - premiership
2018 - minor premiership
2019 - premiership
2020 - premiership
so I hope we keep getting significantly shafted by the umps.
I'd like to see the differential data on finals only in this period.
I feel like we get a pretty good run in finals?
If so, it suggests 3 possibilities
1. Its umpire quality affecting our differential
2. Its crowd noise affecting our differential, or
3. Its the way we play finals footy all year that affects our differential, and in finals, the affect is negated when the opposition plays finals footy too.
given Stevic gave us a really good run in the prelim in Adelaide last year, I think we can exclude 1. and 2.
leaving me with 3.
can anyone provide finals only free kick data for 2017-2020 to test this theory further?
And they throw the ball more then any then any other team. The Bulldogs Free Kick Differential results year on year since 2016:
2016 - 1st
2017 - 1st
2018 - 4th
2019 - 1st
2020 - 7th
2021 - 2nd
WTF is going on........
I think you are spot on. Can't remember one of our finals being influenced by an umpire. Perhaps it is a bit of 1 (are there really any "good" umpires?) but as you suggest mainly 3.
