Some great intercept marking on Friday night. Just the sort of thing we need when up against good teams. This sort of play goes a long way to limiting the damage when the opposition are on top, it goes a long way to winning games.

On wwhat we have seen so far this year, Rance comparisons have been premature.

What's happened to you Oldie, you were once a positive young fella :) it's not all doom and gloom in 2021, we're crawling to the bye as we always do.

As for Noah, he's only young and may never be Rance but a damn good player for us.

I'm just stating facts. Noah may well become a good player but I think people forget how good Rance was. The comparisons need to stop.

He's no Rance. Rance was a once in a lifetime type of player. Balta's been very good in the one on one's and has been taking some ripper marks but I think he's being shown out a bit against the fast leading opponents where he doesn't seem to have the ability to change directions quickly which affects his closing speed. Also think he can get a bit more creative with his disposal. Kicking long is easily countered when it's continually expected. Still a lot of improvement left him him, glad he's a Tiger.

i mean, who's even doing that lately? strange thing to bring up in the first place.

not saying you shouldn't have an opinion ToO, but you've been pretty negative of late. we've bagged three cups and we are in our traditional slow burn phase of the season.

Rance wasn’t that great in his first 50 games plus even at his peak, he was challenged by the monster key forwards. He had poor games too & noticeably dropped away in the 2018 season including a really poor prelim.

He was/is the best Richmond key defender I’ve ever seen in 40 years of going (better than Francis Bourke), and it’s unfair & unrealistic to compare Balta to him.

Balta’s two great strengths as a key back are his marking (especially contested) & ability to match the monster key forwards. He’ll get better countering the lead as he gets more experience. We’re lucky to have him.

Interesting you say that , I rocked up to the London Friday evening with Tooheys and though I couldn’t put my finger on it , he didn’t seem his normal self ?

Agree

Rance and Balta had/have different strengths, and probably shouldn't be compared with each other.
Rance's reading of the play and pace allowed him to leave his man and intercept. Balta is more a man on man defender than what Rance was.
It's Grimes who has replaced Rance, not Balta.

Balta is going to be a very very good player for the Club.
I will certainly enjoy making some comparisons along the way.
Might be wrong on some occasions and spot on at other times.

Reckon it’s just good to be in a situation where we can actually have a genuine discussion that compares Balta with Rance
Doesn't have to be a conclusion now anyway

IMO Balta has been ordinary or poor for most of this season. He's had the one good game, very good.

I'm a fan. But if Miller were fit I think he'd deserve a run.

BTW I think Noah may have a niggle. Lost 20m in kicking penetration. (A few samples.)

I think Noah can fight back. Now would be a good time to string a ew together.

Balta is just 21. Turns 22 in October.

Played just 38 games

Least of our problems at the moment. Keep playing him

The good thing is Balta seems to learn by his mistakes so that is positive going forward

Still a work in progress.
yes and no

I think Rance in his second year was hit and miss at times - there were times I sat their thinking what on earth is Rance doing so I think Baltaman is doing OK for someone who hasn’t cracked 40 games yet.

Comparing Baltaman to a 150 - 200 game Rance is as you say laughable - he has a long long way to go to get to that standard.
