Goodbye Mabior Chol

From 3-4 weeks ago:

A bit of amnesia in this thread.

I didn’t think his game was any better than a couple of his matches from last year early in the hub.

Let’e wait and see how he’s going 6 weeks from now.

We haven’t reached 6 weeks yet, but sounds like people are already growing frustrated with his lack of urgency and inconsistency.

Chol will always have these flaws, the question is whether we can live with them for his pay grade.

He's not supposed to be the answer. He's supposed to be the pinch hitter. He's being asked to fill the boots of Soldo and Nank. That's a huge ask and not what he was recruited for.
I can understand where your coming from KR , I think most have seen the oh ahhh’s from Chol , what he was recruited for is irrelevant, Short was recruited as a forward , won a B & f as a back, George recruited as a defender, 3 time premiership forward , his good stuff is AFL elite . As you say he’s pinch hitting , my issue with him is a pinch hit ruck needs to be able to impact somewhere else on the ground as well , Chol again has shown glimpses as a forward, however his lack of work rate and application that a forward needs has him going missing for long periods . Obviously it’s unfair to judge him on his one game against Natanui, however NN career average is .01 goals a game , that night Naitanui kicked 2 crucial goals , for me it was Chols lack of work that allowed that , harsh yes , but it’s the stuff he dosent do when he hasn’t got the ball that worries me . I’d imagine with how many times he’s been in and out of the team in 6 years shows how frustrated the MC would be with him. Imho he’s the biggest tease we have , not hard to understand why he has fans such as yourself KR

I thought Chol was one of our better players on the night.

And I've never been a massive fan. He's not the issue right now. Might actually be in career best form.

If he was playing second ruck, forward, and Nank or Soldo was in, we might have won two of the last three.

He’s terrible at reading the play but OK when the ball comes his way.
He’s our Cox.
Anyway, I gave him a vote, despite him being AWOL for most of the game.

Some fair analysis there Bright One but I wouldn't characterise my defence of Chol as "fandom". His workrate off the ball has always been suspect and his ability (willingness?) to track his opposite number deep and make himself an effective defender in that circumstance is a real worry. My main reason for defending him is that he is improving in those areas. I take that as a positive. I take your point about playing "out of position" but there is a massive jump from 3rd string to 1st ruck. He is at least giving a contest and halving quite a few. That's progress. I like progress.

I’m still a fan. Get super fit Chol the clock is ticking.

I certainly hope your right and I’m wrong KR, his upside is enormous

I think this a harsh assessment of a 3rd string ruckman/forward. I see improvement in general. He was Vickery-like before his demotion. Refused to take any body contact in ruck or in marking contests. Liked his football hermetically sealed and Harpic Fresh. Often displayed no effort. Now goes at it in the ruck. Tried his best against Nic-Nat and took his lumps. No mean feat that. Took his marks in contests. These are all improvements. The bigger, stronger natural forward in CCJ couldn't get near the footy. Got monstered in the ruck. I still think Marbs is to be persisted with. Some blokes take longer. If there was no improvement I might agree with you.

Mmm. I think in the main we agree, KR.

I contend that MC is a perfectly adequate #3 ruck. I contend that his failures and weaknesses are based on a lack of football ability and a lack of experience, confidence and stamina, both experience related. I contend that Mabior's failings are not moral. Are not of character. Further I expressed above that think Mabior just levelled up again.

We do disagree very much on one point. I think that Mabior is miles stronger in the air than CJ. At ruck contests. Completely different prospect. CJ is very easily swept aside when the ball is in the air. I noted this in his first season. And I've noted it again this week. A big weakness in CJ's game is strength under the ball. He's not running under it. He's pushed under it.

ATM IMO Mabior is a vastly superior ruck. But he's more experienced too. That said, if I had to pick one I'd pick Mabs.

I agree. CJ for a big lad doesn't hold his ground. Hopefully he can learn this if he stays a Tiger. Mabs is progressing well. Will be much better when he doesn't have to be no.1 ruck. Hopefully that's next week.

Perhaps we only disagree in degree? I thought CCJ looked good on-the-lead but, as you say, seems to be missing some core strength. Might just be our style of rhetoric on Marbs. I think we probably agree in the main.

I disagree that CJ can't hold his ground. The reason he's scored quite well so far is exactly that reason, he can hold his ground. Have sen him get into good positions in the ruck too but in ruck terms he's just a baby. Will keep building that body and become better imo.

Chol, we:ve seen what we get. No consistency in performance or effort.

Solo rucking against Grundy this week could be the making or breaking of Mabs. Hopefully the former...
