Coronavirus

Sorry Roar - you can’t compare the risk of these events - we don’t think or act like that.

You can’t have a car accident watching footy at the mcg, or having a beer at the pup, or someone cleaning your room if you live in an aged care facility, or you stay in a hotel room on the same floor as someone else.

Its to simplistic which is why the community don’t buy the feds messaging on this.

Even the freedom day people of the UK have had many lockdowns.
We will have to agree to disagree. There is risk in everything. Saying you can’t compare risk is just incorrect and an issue society will have to learn to cope with (we do on 1000s of things they just aren’t forced into our face every day as explicitly as coronavirus is).

please note for context I’m taking about AFTER everyone gets an opportunity to vaccinate, NOT right now. So you do get a choice. Vaccinate and go to the footy vs don’t vaccinate and go to the footy. Just like choosing to ride a motorbike vs taking a car. I appreciate your point on passively getting it from someone else - you still (in the overwhelming majority of cases) have a choice to vaccinate.

A national covid response to outbreaks would also be a good thing. Won't get that with this federal government though.
Should have been from the start. The single biggest reason we have the current situation. Massive failure of leadership that will see Scomo lose the next election - deservedly. His legacy -the shittest PM ever.

22 cases today in Victoria. All linked but no idea how long infectious in the community yet..
Sheesh.

I don’t think anyone was expecting this. hopefully these cases haven’t stemmed from the pub showing the euro final, or else we are in serious trouble. Fingers crossed most were in Iso during their infectious period. wished the DHHS would release this stat in their daily release

On face value those numbers don't sound good but the key is how many have been in the community whilst infectious.

That said you'd hope they'd be going down not up after a 5 day lockdown.

I hold the state ministers jointly responsible for this along with sco mo. One hold out means no federal response right? it’s the worst situation if you need unanimous agreement and just one party wants to play politics. You are hosed if they aren’t in your party and you don’t have some other way of applying pressure to get them to do the right thing.

don’t disagree with your point though.

So you blame Berejiklian, and Morrison?
As far as I can see all other premiers, and Chief Ministers, have responded about the same, after Victoria's failed attempts at managing increasing numbers last year. Lockdown early to stop numbers getting out of control.

India’s death toll 10 times higher than official count at 4 million (paywalled)

India’s death toll during the pandemic topped four million, ten times the official count, according to a report.

The study published by the Centre for Global Development and Harvard University found that the pandemic was probably the worst human tragedy in India’s modern history.

India has recorded more than 414,000 Covid-19 deaths, according to official statistics, but experts have warned since the crisis began that the true caseload and death toll are likely to be many times higher. Those suspicions have increased since a second wave of infections devastated the country this year, with 400,000 new cases and fatalities exceeding 4,000 a day, triggering a collapse of the healthcare system.

The government of Narendra Modi has dismissed the claims as exaggerated. States have been accused of covering up Covid-19 deaths to save face since the start of the crisis. This has exacerbated inaccurate record-keeping in the world’s second most populous nation, which has a population of 1.4 billion. Most Indians die at home, while at the peak of the second wave thousands of bodies were dumped in the Ganges or buried in shallow graves as wood for funeral pyres ran short.

The report used three data sources to calculate excess deaths - the gap between recorded and expected deaths - during the pandemic up to June 21. Researchers extrapolated data from the civil registration system that records births and deaths across seven states, accounting for half of India’s population. This was combined with data from two nationwide antibody tests and set against global fatality rates in different age groups. Finally, the study looked at a survey of consumers conducted across thousands of Indian households three times a year, which also records whether a family member has died in the past four months.

The researchers, who included Arvind Subramanian, India’s former chief economic adviser, cautioned that Covid-19 deaths in the seven states may not be the same across the whole of India. However, they concluded that “actual deaths during the pandemic are likely to have been an order of magnitude greater than the official count”. A death toll of four million or higher represented “arguably India’s worst human tragedy since partition and independence” in 1947, the study said.

its easier, and quicker,

to blame the LNP.

and its a catch all.

Covid response, Corruption, Cilling reefs and rivers, Climate Change denial, Cotton, Coal, C *smile* s

worst Govt in our history, at the worst possible time.

hopefully we get them out before we add China to the list,

which Dutton is trying to expedite.

Hey Roar, disagree with your comparisons to road deaths and smoking deaths - these are predictable statistically and will not overwhelm the health system. That's a false equivalence. A comparison to flu deaths is much more apt IMO.

However, agree that corona will become endemic and we will "learn to live with it" - most of us will get boosters annually, there will be deaths each year, there will be people who suffer long covid. The big question then is when do we decide the risk is small enough, or manageable enough for us to open up and cease lockdowns. We might see situations where nursing homes go into semi-lockdown if there is a case or covid is out in the surrounding community.

Yep for sure I’m assuming that once everyone has a chance to get vaccinated there isn’t a secondary effect to the rest of the community And the existing systems can handle the caseload it generates. I was focused on the individual choice of doing something riskier like motorbike riding vs automobile travel and the individual choice to vaccinate once everything is opened up.

I don’t think we have a cohesive view of the secondary effects of lockdown. It gets over simplified to dollars Vs lives. But the mental stress and loss of f2f learning for kids etc are hard to quantify. Being mainly utilitarian in my thinking i simplify an Overall good objective for society as maximising quality of life on average per person over eternity (until sun red dwarfs) but be buggered if I know how you measure that. it fits my narrative on making difficult trade offs like what we are discussing here. (Tim Hartford podcast cautionary tales very good at looking at secondary effects - my classic is where a train derailed it so they slowed it down permanently causing more people to drive to work because that was quicker leading to more automobile deaths than saved by risk of another train derailment)

the road toll is down 20% with lockdowns so a minor secondary effect positive for anyone looking for a ray of sunshine. Flu deaths are zero I heard but haven’t seen stats. I guess COVID got those very susceptible to flu first or they weren’t exposed.

Ive got to give credit where credit is due from a selfish POV;

the Sydney lockdown, with regional NSW essentially normal (masks indoors and 5 visitors, very good compliance) is logical and seems to be working.

I think this is better policy than Vic whole state lockdown, and I think all of regional Vic would agree.
Well Ezy....I live 60 k from Melbourne cbd but classed as metro ☹️
Very tired of city lockdowns and now had enough of really terrible weather...maximums ranging between 10 and 13 this week with rain every day.
Ready to come to your region. I need to get away from infected city folk.
How's the property market up there?
Just need some warmth, a yard for the mini Schnauzer, a club or two to see some life and have some fun ..( what is that).
A little modern house , driving distance to the beach.
What have you got?

Hmmm..just had a look.
Well, a million dollars will buy half a house.

It'd be a shitbox too,

with wife-swapping,coke head, insta-spivs in linen on one side,

and an AirB&B party central, overflowing your wheels bin with bottles and cans, on the other side.

110 in NSW. 73 infectious in the community..keeps going up.

Gladys now gaslighting by saying if she hadn't locked down as fast as she did they'd have 1000s of cases now..spare me!

The spin Is outrageous. Any politician that owns their mistakes and learns from them will have my support.

look at what it did for dimma and Richmond.
