2021 Draft Thread

Just regarding Johnson i am now more convinced that Matty Clarke and his team didnt rate Johnson a player we had on our board
there was reports that both Richmond and hawks were trying to get pick #21 from freo and the Hawks certainly were and freo wanted him and rightfully kept their selection for a local boy. But after listening to the podcast i got the impression that we would have selected Sonsie if the trade was done.

Now that might be just talk from Clarke backing the players we selected but sounds like Brown & Sonsie were definitely targets
I have heard that Brown & in particular Sonsie were the targets had we traded.

I did qualify my statements with a compelling case clause - elite kicking definitely grounds to select in the first round. I think Lukosious will settle in as a forward, probably as early as 2022. Christian Salem fits into the Hurn/Rich category of elite kick. This is where I'm willing to negotiate, Salem was also an athletic freak, in fact he would have been a Tiger if it wasn't for Melbourne spoiling the party. This recruiting caper is such a fine line, Frank looks like a genius if he gets his first preference but looks like a dud when his second preference (Lennon) stinks up his pretty good record up to this point.

For bargain basement rebounders look no further than the state leagues, this is where there are some outstanding deals. If not then roll the dice on a Rory Laird (pick 86). I think if you throw enough darts at the junk end then you come up trumps. This is what I mean by playing the percentages and apportioning risk at various stages in the draft.

If Brown fits into the Rich/Hurn/Salem category of elite kick then no probs, I'm totally on board. Do I genuinely believe he's in that category? Hmmm, I'm not entirely sold but happy to be proven wrong.
Clarke commented on what we tend to look for in draftees on TT, he said we've always rated kicking as something we go for but given how we've played in recent yrs we've generally gone slightly away from that a touch but have gone back to it this yr given how the game has changed with the new rules etc. I am not as confident as i'd like to be that the AFL will reverse any of the recent yrs rule changes, in particular the "stand" rule.
The funny thing is, if they reverted back to the rules of '10, the last season before the start of the reduction of interchange (1st sub rule) they'd achieve everything they have been trying to achieve with the 7456736736743673 changes they have made in the last decade. Instead they seem to prefer more rule changes to fix issue's created by previous rule changes.

Think he's off to train at Tulla too, if I heard correctly?
Apart from their rewriting of history on Foxfooty, they have their own segment on 7 News presented by a completely unbiased Tim Watson nightly.
Funny how, during the drug saga days he never seemed to know what was going at the Club, despite the fact his son was Captain & was involved behind the scenes with the family's of the players etc, but now seems to know a lot more when his son is now long retired.

Thx Turk, good point. I had forgotten he only signed for a year.
Even more convinced the Bombers and others will make a play if it costs them nothing apart from cap space.
i could be wrong but i'd assume he's restricted? Therefore we can match then trade? We only have 3 picks next yr within the 1st 2 rounds then nothing till 4th round so we could be prepared that we could be trading someone out to get back in to the Draft potentially

I think 3 picks will be enough next year and if we really like a player can always use the 2023 picks which we rarely do.

Lets hope we keep any player under 30 that we want to keep and our youngsters really step up this year and start taking time away from players like Cotchin ,Lambert , Edwards ,Caddy , Parker , Pickett

There's a good article in a certain Website that shows that after we drafted Gibcus we got on the phone to try trade with St Kilda to get Hobbs. They didn't want to go back to 17.
West Coast were called, but were already dealing with Port.
Essendon knocked us back too.

Clearly we wanted Hobbs pretty bad to try three times after our pick.

Not being able to get 23 was just so crucial on so many fronts. 28 just didn’t give us the leverage we needed. Although 17 might have been just as much an issue.

Whatever, just a yard short of pulling off a massive Draft coup. Gibcus/Hobbs/Clarke/Banks. Sometimes these things work out for the better anyway, so who knows eg the Sonz factor.

If our pick swaps had gone through,we may of ended up with 3 Rebel player's

We looked into it but didnt go nearly as hard for the Sonz as we did for Hobbs and Lohmann on night 1

Some pretty generous deals knocked back Involving future picks. Makes me think next year must be average or just so uncertain

I really think we could drop off a few of those Average midfielders if they dont come on this year. Ross, Martyn, RCD, Dow could either be dropped , traded if they dont perform or get time in the ones

RCD and Dow are safe the other 2 need to lift their game or will be gone

Interesting that Hobbs and Lohmann where different types to what we recruited,l think we went with what the recruiters thought was best available .

Important article by Caldum. The narrative for a week has been that Richmond won the draft, so it was crucial someone point out that we lost.
