Brendon Gale

Interesting article by Caro in the Saturday Age.
Benny G and Blair met Balmey for lunch at the Rowena Parade cafe.
Tapped Balmey on the shoulder, told him his time at RFC had expired.
(Obviously, Balmey was blindsided.)
Personally, I think it showed disrespect to a great Richmond Immortal.
I don't necessarily agree he was blindsided, but he was personally shocked. The rest of the article talks about how they've been gradually taking things out of his remit. He wasn't part of the Yze selection for example.
His health isn't great (eg doctor told him not to go to Adelaide and travel away from specialists), and he said he has some trouble controlling his emotions.
I think if he reflects on it in a couple of years, the signs were there.
Shame they did it in the Milk Bar though. That's a *smile* poor Jerry Maguire tactic. We should be better than that to someone so influential.

We’re a very low key club.
Brendan Gale did Simon Mathew’s annual performance review at the Albert Park Hotel late last year over a few pots

So we are a $100 million dollar business

Would like to know where the money we where giving to blame is now going to be spent

All our staff have been poached

What exactly do we have the money for ?
Perhaps break that down and re heat it , all of our staff poached , what’s so there’s no one left , anyone that’s gone has been replaced or about to , settle petal

I'd imagine Simon met his expectations or exceeded them if that's the case!
Still, telling someone you're winding them up in a cafe, that could be handled a little more sensitively. Balmey was pretty candid in that he wasn't exactly jumping for joy at their decision. I don't think anyone would have intended any harm, but could have been done a bit better.

I’ve been finished up a couple of times in an office , I don’t feel any better about it, still remember walking up the stairs knowing my fate following a re structure

I suggest take anything that Caro says with a grain of salt. She knows how to attract clicks.

She makes calculated guesses and paints it as nearly fact by saying things like "I'm told". The dogs have been talking Gale going to Tassie since the idea of a team was first floated. He's been at the RFC a long time, been to the top of the mountain, we've got rebuilding to do etc, so him taking the Tassie job is at least an even money bet. If he goes, she's a scoop, if someone else gets the job the media are very rarely held to account. Sam MaClure does exactly the same thing, ala Dusty to GC, eventually you get a few of your guesses correct.

The article was basically an interview with Balme himself.
I don't know how you can get the 'calculated guesses' take out of it.

Really not sure how it could be handled better.
Taking him to Vue Du Monde and spending $3000 on a bottle of Leflaive Montrachet 1999 would have had the same result when one party didn’t expect it. After the initial shock, Balmy himself said that he’s at peace with it. Not sure there’s ever a great time to say goodbye but it was done in person by the right people, not by text or email.
And apparently he enjoyed his oat milk latte and vanilla slice to go.

Not in a public place.

Never had a conversation like that with anyone in a public place. It lacks empathy for the individual receiving the news.

She is both.

There was a time when she knew everything that happened at Tigerland, clearly had very good sources. Not sure that’s the case these days.

Her father is Ian Wlison, ex RFC president. I used to know Ian quite well through mutual business friends, Caro only met a few times.
