Nice effort, but I'd have waited til after the drafts.
Work in progress... Can always modify ;) Won't be much more to add as first year players aren't regulars anyway...

Fair enough. Gives you something to do on these dreary days too. :)
Precisely... Agonizing wait for the completion (reasoning for wait is for completion of exams?!)

This new sub rule is going to be very interesting I think. For example, having Tomahawk as Geelong's sub. What will that do to the course of the game. How will it work if Chappy or a Hunty get injured and can't come back. He would come on for them right? But what if no one got injured? Would he come on for Big Otto? Or Cam? Like late in the game? If the sub doesn't play can they play VFL?

What sort of player should be a sub? Someone who can play anywhere? I reckon someone like Daryl White who played for Brisbane would be ideal or maybe these days someone like Pat Ryder or for you guys, Shane Tuck. But you would really want them available for the whole game wouldn't you. I am just not sure how this is going to work.

I think it might change how the bench players are picked too. it is certainly going to affect the rotations.

ps. I am hating looking at that Catter's side without Junior and Rookey in it. :'(

Seems like everyone thinks the sub will be used to store a backup ruckman. I can't see Malthouse wanting to sub-out Jolly midway through the third quarter and have Leigh Brown ruck out the rest of the game especially against sides with a decent ruckman.

We'll probably see the sub used to store another running player and clubs start picking talls who can hold down a position (most likely up forward) and have them pinch hit in the ruck. Geelong have Hawkins for this, Adelaide have Tippet, Hawthorn could use Roughhead and Richmond look like they are going to groom Vickery and Post for this role. The important thing is that the pinch hitting ruckman can hold down another position.

Most clubs went into games last year with a bench of three smalls and a tall (usually a ruckman). They will probably still pick three smalls on the bench and a forth as the sub. I think clubs will also be looking for more versatile players too to help cover for injuries particularly to talls. Again, using Collingwood as an example, players like O'Brien and Maxwell who can play tall or small will be even more valuable because if they have any injuries to their talls you will likely see N. Brown, Ried or Tarrent thrown forward and O'Brien or Maxwell used to cover for them in defense.

So, a rule that is designed to restrict the use of interchange rotations for running players will probably end up affecting talls more as there will be less of them played and those that do get a game will be asked to do a lot more. Gotta love unintended consequences.
