Pretty crazy footage last night.

Something out of a disaster / action movie.

Just horrible outcomes.

You have to wonder what (multiple factors) caused it.
That bridge in Tassie many years ago. The Costa Concordia a few years ago. That cargo ship in the Suez a couple of years ago. Someone supposed to be doing the steering has a minor brain fart n all hell breaks loose when steering a ship goes wrong. Probably a miracle n blessing that it happened at 0130 and hardly anyone was on the bridge just imagine if it had been peak hour n the bridge was full.

Yeah, Tasman Bridge disaster was attributed to human error (plonker Skipper pissed off his head at the wheel). Whereas early indications seem to be this accident in Baltimore will be attributed to mechanical failure of the vessel.

Ahh, so the mechanic is gunna be the one who gets arse reamed this time. Unfortunate fact of life, that nothing is ever perfect n sometimes the *smile* just hits the fan no matter what you try n do. Shocking nightmare for all who are somehow involved in any aspect of this incident, can only be thankful that it happened in the middle of the night and minimal people were harmed rather than it happening in the peak of day where it could have been hundreds of people.

Not that I’m any sort of expert or authority on maritime port operations. But in Hobart, large vessels are not permitted to pass through under the bridge without two accompanying tugs. Part of extra precautionary measures taken in the aftermath of the 1975 Tasman Bridge incident, that still remain in place. Obviously to prevent any boat going off course, whether that be through human error or mechanical failure.

Totally outdated n way to over cautious P.T. Bloody hovering around like one of them helicopter parents that want a harness n safety net for whenever little Johnny wants to climb a virtual tree on his tablet. Them boat thingys are super high tech n fancy these days got lots of don't crash safety stuff built into them. Considering the millions of miles n tonnes of freight they shift each year, what's a pissy little bridge n half a dozen pedestrians once every 5 or 6 years, hardly bloody relevant.

I’ve seen some right wingers trying to connect it to Biden’s immigration policies. Seriously
Well that's obviously right. Who else made the immigration rules to allow a foreign owned ship full of foreign sailors who obviously couldn't steer the ship properly or didn't know the local waterway rules to come into the country n crash their dirty great ship into the bridge? Musta been that sleepy Joe idiot.

They also stop traffic while the vessel passes under

Correct. Some suggest that is possibly a bit of overkill, as the main channel pylons are designed to withstand a minor hit from a vessel (the 1975 collision of course didn’t happen in the main channel - the skipper was way, way off course and hit the secondary pylons). But having accompanying tugs seems a reasonable measure to a non-expert casual observer like me.

One alt-right podcaster claimed that you need "the best people" to build structures like this in a bizarre attempt to link it to affirmative action policies. Even though the bridge was built from 1968-1977  and even if all the civil engineers were good white protestant folk having a *smile*-off big ship ram into a pylon probably won't be good
