RICHMOND footy great Bill Barrot is in hospital after a heart attack during yesterday's former players charity match at the Punt Rd oval.

The Hall of Fame champion had the attack at half time in the club rooms after playing two quarters and was revived by the Mica unit.

Barrot, 59, is in a stable condition at the Epworth hospital.

The 120-game veteran was centreman for the 1967 and 1969 premiership sides.

He was playing centre in yesterday's match, alongside legends such as Michael Roach and Francis Bourke, raising money for the Former Players and Officials Association.

He complained of chest pains at half time and field doctor David Marsh immediately ordered the Mica unit when Barrot's heart rate dramatically dropped.

The match continued after half time and the Richmond players – coached by Tom Hafey – were only told of the drama after the game.

"We are all shocked," said the association president Mike Perry.

"He's not out of the woods yet, we are just keeping our fingers crossed."

Dr Marsh, the Herald Sun Victorian of the Year, was yesterday hailed a hero for his quick actions.

"David did a magnificent job getting the Mica unit there on time," said Nick Anagnostopoulos, who was helping Dr Marsh on the boundary. "Saying he saved his life is an understatement."

Despite the ordeal, about 3000 spectators watched on as Richmond defeated the Corporate Allies team (coached by Mal Brown) by two goals.

Former Richmond full forward Michael Roach, who left the ground with a hamstring injury, said Barrot had decided not to play after half-time.

"He came off at half-time and everything was fine and he said he'd had enough," Roach said.

"He was in the showers with Dicky Clay and started to feel a little bit off colour." Roach confirmed that Barrot was "lost" a couple of times in the ambulance.

"They are doing all the tests now and he is in the best hands, and fingers crossed that he is OK," Roach said.

"We were lucky that Dr David Marsh, who is a terrific doctor, was there when Billy starting to feel off colour."

Roach returned to the after-match function at Punt Rd to tell Barrot's teammates and officials of the former centreman's condition.

Dr Marsh told the shocked players "we lost him for a minute".

Jim Jess, another former Tiger who played in the match, said everyone was shocked to learn of Barrot's heart attack.

"It put a big dampener on the game when we found out," Jess said.
