Geelong chief executive Brian Cook has confirmed that the Cats are making room in their salary cap for an end-of year a swoop on a big-name forward.

Speaking on Sport927, Cook said that the club has its eyes on any of approximately ten out-of-contract players, including Fremantle’s Trent Croad and Brisbane’s Daniel Bradshaw.

“We’re working diligently on trying to look at key forwards and we might be able pick one,” he said.

“Is it is an important thing for us at the club.”

“Our total player payments are at such a level that we will be able to afford it, but we have to spend our money wisely.”

Cook said the Cats were particularly keen on Bradshaw, who has struggled to hold his place in the dual-premiership winning Lions side after missing out on last year’s Grand Final.

“He comes out of contract this year but I think a lot of other clubs will have his name at the top of their list.”

He said that while the Cats would be very active during the trade period, the club realised that after such a disappointing first half of the 2003 season, there was a lot of progress to be made with the players it already has on its list.

“It is a big issue but it’s not the only one, I think on a general level our lack of progress throughout has been the disappointing thing,” he said.

“Generally speaking most of our senior fellows haven’t impressed as much as we would have liked them to.”

Nathan Thompson from Hawthorn is the one that Cats are after.

We should look at a trade for James Bartel from Geelong. A good quick midfielder we could do with another one of those......or 3 or 4 more in fact!!

Boss: I think i heard Bartel was a tigers fan when a youngster too. He would be ok.
Is it a worry though that he cannot get a regular game at Geelong and they are struggling. From what i have seen though i do like the look of him.

Yeh I heard that he was a Tigerboy also Shawry. He was highly regarded in the Under 18s and had a pretty good first year. There was an article in today's Herald Sun where Bomber Thompson questioned the defensive side of his game. Still if they decide to trade him, there would be alot of clubs interseted including us I hope.

Bartel - no thanx. If he struggles to get a game for geelong who are full of young and inexperienced players then don't wast your time. Enough of drafting other clubs scraps

Bartel would be a very handy pick up for our midfield, he showed plenty last year, but is struggling this year, probably a case of the 'second year blues'.

He would be a great addition to the Tigers, hopefully if Geelong are keen to trade him we can do a deal.

Perhaps we could give Houlihan and Biddiscombe back.

How about Richardson and a second round pick to Geelong - for Pick 4 and Bartel to Richmond.

I do like Bartel and think he will compliment our midfield well and do think he isnt getting a chance by Bomber Thompson at the moment.

Richo needs a new home and im sure Geelong would crave him down at the Cattery and he might do alright down there.

We get a potential star at number 4 - maybe a Raphael Clarke(KP) or Kepler Bradley(KP) and the process of our list being redefined has started by doing this.

*Note (KP) meaning Key Position.

You're very generous Tigerbob.

Based on the Carey deal last year, Richo would command their first round pick and a player or another pick at least.

I doubt it

Carey , one of the greatest players of all time

Richo , one of the greatest headcases of all time

I would love to be proved wrong but i cannot see a club giving up a first rounder for him.

Its got nothing to do with being the greatest of all time or being a headcase.

Richo is 28 and can still run and jump a bit. Plus on his day he is one of, if not the best contested mark going around.

Carey was 32 and well past his best, yet Adelaide paid 2 first round picks for him.

If we could trade Richo for a first round pick and Bartel we should take it, that would be a great trade.

Geelong have plenty of young players, and would probably be prepared to trade a high pick for an experienced player, particularly a key forward
