Cleary clarifies Richmond fee.
by Anthony Dowsley

NEWLY-ELECTED Coburg Tigers president Phil Cleary is
negotiating with the Richmond Football club to be a
paid consultant on a joint public relations strategy.

The former VFA great dispelled rumours he was being
paid by Coburg for his services as president but said
it was within his rights to charge its partner club for consultancy work.

"I am not getting an honorarium from the Coburg
Football Club," he said.

"I'm the president of the club, but if I offer professional
advice to the Richmond Football Club I expect to get
paid for that."

Cleary, a public relations consultant to the VFL, LaTrobe
University and Elecrical Trades Union, said he wa holding
talks with Richmond about a marketing stradegy to
make the partnership between Coburg and Richmond cost-efficient.

He said he did not believe there was a conflict of interest
in undertaking consultancy work for Richmond about its
partnership with Coburg.

"Richmond wants a stradegy based on my expertise," he said.

"I won't run around providing services to the Richmond
Football Club for nothing.

"If Richmond want to, like any AFL club, enlist my
services, it will come with a fee.

Cleary said Richmond approached him about consultancy because it wanted to "Protect its interests".

But the Coburg legend and Brunswick resident said he
was tired of having his contribution to the Coburg
Football Club questioned.

Cleary said he was owed about $20,000 by the club after being underpaid for three seasons between 1982 and 1984, but had written off the dept.

"I'm technically a creditor of the club," he said. "But I'm
not one of these people that take their club to court.

"My contributions have been substantial."

Richmond Football Club football director Greg Miller said
they had held talks with Cleary and his position as
president was irrelevant. "He is very experienced in this
field," he said. "There is some work we are looking at."
Miller said Cleary would work on issues relating to
Coburg's revenue generating ability and building an
independant club.

Depends on the size of the work i guess. IF it is a complex process then fair enough he gets paid i guess, but if it doesnt take much time and is in his role as president of Coburg then i would say he is being a scumbag.

Fair enough I reckon. The presidency of a club is usually a very time consuming, unpaid position.
If Richmond expect Phil to contribute to them to any extent I think it's approprriate for him to be compensated for his time and efforts.
I guess it depends how much Richmond expect from Phil really.
