Disappointing Tiger's Humbled by Sandringham
Monday 19 May 2003
The Coburg Tigers came out eager to back up last week’s winning performance against the Bendigo Bombers as they faced an inconsistent Sandringham at Trevor Barker Oval in windy conditions.

Coburg lost the toss and were forced to kick into a 4-5 goal wind. Leigh Carlson held thing together early with some great solid work in the backline. Paddy Steinfort worked hard in the middle of the ground giving the midfield first use of the ball but the Tigers struggled to hold the surging Zebras. Coming back from injury a nervous Kristian De Pasquale entered the game 15-minutes into the quarter and looked lively.

The Zebras kicked 5 first quarter goals and kept the Tigers goalless.

Kicking with the gale in the second quarter Coburg through Simon Hart got things rolling with the opening goal. The Tiger’s midfield lifted with Eric Kuret getting 6 possessions and a kicking a great evasive goal late in the term. The forward pocket specialist Garth Taylor also snapped a goal late to bring back the margin.

Duncan Kellaway, as always, worked hard and gathered possessions advancing the Tiger’s forward. But some missed opportunities in front of goal limited the Coburg clawing back into contention. Although the Tigers won the quarter by 7 points they still trailed by 28 points at half time.

The start of the third quarter was very disappointing with Sandringham dominating play kicking early goals. The Tiger’s missed a number of tackles and as Coburg’s pressure dropped considerably the Zebra’s were presented with a lot more opportunities.

Late in the quarter, the Tigers fought back with Martin McGrath halting the opposition attack with two goals and had a hand in setting up Djaran Wyhman for a goal. But the Zebras finished the quarter with a 50-point lead.

In the last quarter, coach Paul Spargo encouraged his players to kick long and run hard, they did just that with a tremendous 60-metre goal from Adam Pickering. The Tiger’s seemed to be spurred on and with a courageous running back with the flight mark by resting ruckman Carlyle, things looked promising.
Coburg’s work rate increased, led by Kellaway, and they began to dominate play but couldn’t get the score on the board.

In the end Sandringham won comfortably by 48 points. It was a very disappointing game by the Coburg Tigers.

Coburg’s best players were Duncan Kellaway who worked hard all day having 7 tackles, 20 possessions and 4 marks. Leigh Carlson continued his consistent season competing hard all day along with Daniel Roberts in the backline.

Best: Kellaway, Carlson, McGrath, Steinfort, and Roberts

This week the reserves play at North Ballarat on Sunday with seniors having a bye.
