Dome a danger: Tigers
By Caroline Wilson
June 10 2003

Two Richmond footballers, believed to be Matthew Richardson and Greg Stafford, alerted club doctor Chris Bradshaw to a series of danger areas on the Telstra Dome surface shortly before last Friday night's Tigers-Kangaroos clash.

While no stadium or AFL official was alerted before the game, Richmond now intends to join Brisbane and lodge an official complaint with the AFL Players Association over the surface, which many of its players regard as hard, uneven and unstable in parts.

The club's director of football, Greg Miller, refused to name the players but confirmed that two senior Tigers had been concerned enough by the state of the surface to alert the club's medicos.

Miller said yesterday that Richmond's player representive, Joel Bowden, had been instructed to speak with the players association about the poor condition of the ground.

Richmond centre half-back Darren Gaspar received a season-ending knee injury and midfielder Kane Johnson is unlikely to return until the end of the month after hurting his calf during the Kangaroos game.

"The AFL and Telstra (Dome) won't acknowledge it but it's not good enough," said Miller, who will also meet AFLPA chief executive Rob Kerr this week.

"Players are getting injured and it's becoming a massive issue at club level.

"I hate to imagine what it's doing to Essendon, who play so many games there, and now the Kangaroos and the Bulldogs. It doesn't matter what they say, the ground is much harder than any other surface in the AFL and it's uneven. It's much harder than any of the grounds we are training on."

Kerr said yesterday that he planned to hold talks with the stadium's chief executive, Ian Collins, and the AFL in a bid to solve the problem.

"It's disappointing that it hasn't improved," said Kerr. "We've discussed it at our executive meetings and the feeling at the start of the year was that the situation had shown some improvement. We didn't have pre-season rock concerts this year.

"But reading some of the comments over the weekend, obviously it's continuing to be a big concern with some players. I must say, the clubs have got to show more responsibility if we are going to identify and fix the problem."

Brisbane captain Michael Voss on Sunday slammed the playing surface at Telstra Dome, describing it as "by far the worst in the AFL". Voss's teammate, reigning Brownlow medallist Simon Black, was one of four other Lions to criticise the ground, describing it as "dangerous in certain parts". Martin Pike suggested that "they would shut another oval down if it was in that state".

The players' association is midway through a survey of all AFL playing surfaces in conjunction with independent researchers from Melbourne University who are being funded by the AFL and are testing movement at all grounds.

The players are being asked to fill in questionaires and to date have taken part in three surveys, which are being conducted in two-week blocks.

Kerr, whose association has spent more than $20,000 on its own equipment for testing surfaces, said he had not yet started to collate the data.

While Collins continues to hit back at player criticism - he told The Age on Sunday that footballers must lodge complaints through the appropriate channels and implied that the Lions' comments were, in part, sour grapes - even the victorious Saints coach, Grant Thomas, agreed the surface was a problem.

Eight players were injured in the St Kilda-Brisbane game, six of them receiving knee, ankle or foot complaints. St Kilda ruckman Trent Knobel, like Richmond's Mark Coughlan, who was mildly concussed the previous night, landed heavily on his head and both clubs indicated that the hardness of the surface posed an extra problem because of its lack of "give".

"The surface there is hard, there is no doubt," Thomas said. "There is no give in the ground whatsoever."

The Saints have played seven of their 11 matches so far this season at Telstra Dome and Thomas said the club had been forced to alter its training methods as a result. "There is no doubt the players have a joint soreness which is more significant than any other ground they play on," he said.

And we sold out to play additional games there this year by choice.
Not happy Tigers.

How long do we have a contract with Telstra Dome?

Do we have to play some home games there under AFL rules, or can we strike a deal with the MCG to play 11 home games there??

We did a deal to play extra home games at Dudlands this season for a certain amount of money....($500,000? I forget now)

Other than that I doubt we could do a deal with the MCC.

I'd imagine the AFL tell teams which ground they'll be playing home games at and clubs probably have little say.

I doubt we ever played our home games at OO by choice.

I'd be happy never to go to Dudlands again in my life.

Give me the rain and cold and good playing surface of the MCG anyday.

1. The agreement for 4 home games a year at Telstra is for 3 years and is worth $500,000 (approx) per year while the MCG is being re-developed

2. As the MCG has 4 home tenants - some home games are scheduled at Telstra. Non of the MCG tenants play 11 games at the MCG. The decision to agrre to play 4 home games a year was signed because:
a) we were going to be scheduled there anyway
b) this way we are guaranteed $$$ - despite the crowd numbers.

I don't understand why we are paid half a million dollars a year if we were going to be scheduled there anyway.

Doesn't make sense to me.

Didn't the club send out a letter explaining why they signed a contract for extra games at Telstra?

We have an agreement with Telstra Dome Management to receive a set figure despite the crowd numbers.

It has been well documented that if you don't get a crowd in excess on 30,000 then you don't make any money. If the AFL schedule us to play there and we get a crowd of only say 20,000 then we make a significant loss. The AFL does not underwrite teams playing there anymore. We are one team that does draw decent crowds to Telstra.

One way or another we would have to play there. At lest this way we make some money out of it. And we need any $$$ we can get at the moment

I still don't understand why they pay us the $500,000 a year if as you say we were playing those games there anyway.

I recall at the time it was mentioned the agreement also included playing low drawing interstate clubs there seeing it was subsidised.

Isn't the financial benefit and underwriting because we agreed to play additional games there?

Otherwise why do we get all that money when we'd have to do it for nothing anyway?

Apparently Brisbane are considering taking this issue up with the AFL as well. But Dean Laidley has dismissed all such claims saying that they allow for the surface with special cool down exercises, more beach work etc.

From memory we would have been scheduled by the AFL to play 3 home games there anyway. RFC made a deal to play 4 home games instead in exchange for $$$. Think the way the MCC bent over backwards for Collingwood who's been at the 'G for only 5 minutes while doing nothing special for Richmond who's been there for nearly 40 years encouraged Richmond to play an extra game at Docklands.

Yes I believe we were told that we were only going to be given draws at floglands against interstate sides (from the club itself) then the draw is released and we are playing teams like the saints the bullies and the roos there?? WTF is that about Richmond??? And then one of our home games at the 'G' is against FREMANTLE FFS!!

Once again the rank and file have been conned for the almighty dollar. If they intended to play Kangas Saints Dogs etc at floglands they new we wouldn't have gone for it.... 'so just tell 'em it'll only be the interstate teams when we play home games there, they won'y mind that'.
I hate being FN lied to!! If Tiger fans knew we would be playing other Melb teams at dicklands as home games how far would this proposal have gotten??
LIED TO AGAIN!! Just like when Campbell didn't re-injure his calf in the weevils game it was a 'fresh injury' or 'twinge' *smile* YOU risked him in a game that was basically over before it began and WE are knowing paying the price for it, and also have the piviligeof being lied to :D

Spot fukcen on Tigerdog!

Just like the U.S. invasion of Iraq to destroy weapons of mass destruction. What a joke, basically just a cash cow for the US, and Australia bought into it.

But what can you do when nobody holds these *smile* accountable? The *smile* is getting so thick you need a chainsaw to cut though it.
