First, or last???

Just thought I'd throw in a bit of off-season trivia.

Which is the only AFL/VFL team to finish the home and away season in last place, but win a Premiership in the same year??

Strange idea, agreed. But it was Fitzroy in 1916. They won Round 1 (v Carlton), won Round 2 (v Richmond), and drew Round 3 (v Collingwood), and didn't win another match for the year. But with just 4 teams in the VFL competition, due to WWI, all teams made the finals.

Fitzroy won 4 finals in a row, v Collingwood by 6 pts, v Richmond by 3 pts, by Carlton by 23 pts and the GF by 29 pts to take the Premiership.

They remain the only club to finish last in the home and away season and still take the Premiership Cup home.

Been and Gone

There are 6 clubs that once played in the VFL / AFL and no longer play in their original state. Can you name them all??

1) The North Melbourne Kangaroos became the Kangaroos in 1999.

2) The Footscray Bulldogs became the Western Bulldogs in 1997.

3) The Fitzroy Lions merged with the Brisbane Bears in 1996 to become the Brisbane Lions.

4) The Brisbane Bears merged with the Fitzroy Lions in 1996 to become the Brisbane Lions.

5) The South Melbourne Swans moved North for the Winter of 1982 and became the Sydney Swans.

6) University disbanded at the completion of the 1914 season.

Bad Run

When they started in the VFL, St Kilda went 3 consecutive seasons without winnning a single game (48 games). In fact, they won just 2 games from their first 6 seasons of VFL football. Nevertheless, the greatest losing streak is held by which other old VFL club??

Answer: University. They lost their last 51 league games, between Round 4 1912 and the end of 1914 (when they disbanded). Their first and last game of the losing streak was, interestingly, against St Kilda.

The 2003 season aside, what is the worst position Richmond has finished in a season after having 6 wins from any consecutive 8 games in the club's history??

Answer: 9th. Richmond broke the record this year by coming 13th despite winning 6 from 8 consecutive games during the season.

Alright, answer this one:

Name 8 AFL/VFL coaches that have coached a premiership and a wooden spoon.

It gets tough around 6, but there is 8.
