Get rid of them only when the AFL says so! One or two bad years is all it takes for things to go downhill and stuff being a minnow like North for the sake of a cause when the other clubs thrive on it

We should use our success to lead, get rid of them and find other revenue sources.

According to the Productivity Commission, more than 40 per cent of pokie revenue comes from problem gamblers. No coincidence that the machines are over concentrated in poorer communities.
I hope the club takes the view that it is unethical to profit from so much misery. That would also makes business sense. One of these days, a government with a spine will decide these machines need stronger regulation to prevent the devastation they cause to human life.

The club would be setting a good example to start reducing its reliance on pokies. Not sure if we're at a point where we can afford to do it, and we'd be ceding ground to clubs like Carlton which has increased its involvement.

Little bit of a mixed message being sent.

True, no one holds a gun to your head but addiction is addiction. If it's causing problems in society and there is no downside to banning them, why not ?

Nothing wrong with it if you consider the money spent a fair price to pay for the entertainment received. It's not my intention to moralise, but the pokie industry is exploitative. Whilst not quite the same as drug money, pokie profits are not too far removed.

The fitness clubs are a great intiaitive and a much more wholesome source of income.

AFL Clubs gaming revenue hit $105 Million in 2016, given that a lot of clubs reported losses or small profits even after AFL handouts means it is a sad fact the AFL and AFL clubs will continue to suck on the teet of the Pokie cash cow.

Would prefer to see all electronic gaming machines dumped far out to sea. It's disappointing that AFL football clubs rely on such sources of garnering revenue. It really is money gained largely from human misery.

It can be done if they want too. But they don't want too

People are unhappy with the club owning pokies, if you all check your Superannuation I bet at least 95% of you own pokies and profit from them. The club walking away from pokies is all good and well but the only thing that will change will be who pockets the profits, it will not save one single problem gambler.

True, being involved in pokies is exactly the same as being involved in drugs and guns.....

I have had some correspondence relating to our on-going involvement in the gaming industry. For several years, the Club has been involved in litigation regarding the lease of the Wantirna Club. Pleasingly, the matter was recently decided in our favour, meaning that the Board is now in a position to consider the Club’s long-term position with respect to gaming.

Good news. Now make it happen.
