Just caught a bit of the Olympic volleyball on TV. Can anyone tell me why one player on each team was wearing a different colured top.

Thank you dayheaven.

The thought did go through my mind but i would have thought an armband or wearing the number 1 would suffice.

I suppose when you rise to the dizzy heights of captain of the Australian Volley Ball team you want more than an arm band to brag about

I hate to rain on your parade Clay but the player with the different coloured top is actually a defensive specialist not the captain & can only make saves & set ups ( no spikes ).

Thats right. He is the LIBERO, an Italian word meaning "free player."

He is not free to do what everybody else does. He can only defend. He is not allowed to spike or serve. That is why he has to go off every now and again.

Go figure!

By the way, I saw some live Volleyball at the last Olympics and this is one seriously spectacular sport when you are courtside.

I am absolutely disgusted that this topic has not been merged with the thread 'Olympics' jb03 you have been around this site long enough to know better. I have a good mind not to let you come to the PREESBBQ. I am also really disappointed AR (Aunty Rosey) hasn't picked this up.
In her defense she has had a few things going on lately. We can discuss this further if someone would start up a 'Gossip about Rosey thread' I would but I am not that type of person....

They are the captain... the 'Aunt Rosy' of the team.

1) It's not my parade, it's OUR parade. It's a Pre Parade. A PREade.

2) If you'll read my text, I did not actually say they were the captain in the same sense as Ricky Ponting or Wayne Cambell are captains. I said that they were the Captain in the sense that Aunt Rosey is our captain. Not literally 'captain' just someone a bit special, who wears a different kind of shirt sometimes, why? Because they can goshdarnit!

Thanks for that (claybevan - thanks withdrawn).

Does that me the guy rotates off when it's "his" turn to serve. Do they rotate the serve through all players like we used to in high school? How do they keep track, it's not as if they play set positions.

I though all the guys with the different t-shirt were small. Must be a new rule, don't remember it last olympics.

jb03 why do you mock me by continuing to discuss this here? And where in golly gosh is AR (Aunty Rosey)?

I was just watching the fencing on the OLYMPIC GAMES and I was wondering, in light of the delightfully curious nature of this thread, if anyone knows why the fencers have that long cord coming out of their backs, apparently tying them in.

Lauder, you seem to be the one with all the answers... shoot! (I just made a shooting motion with my thumb and forefinger... true story)

The long cord attached to the fencers senses when contact has been made and registers a point to the opponent.I presume a mild electric current runs along it and through the fencers vest. When the opponent's foil(sword) makes contact it completes the circuit and sends an electric pulse.

Pee Wee Herman agrees.

 I do

sorry Clay, I would have come up with this answer but evo beat me to it. Seems he must be some kind of Sale of the Century super champion buzzing in before the question is even finished.

chucky from child's play agrees

Sorry to steal your thunder there Launder. In future I will wait and give you first right of refusal on any questions in this thread.

Peter Schwab is sorry too.

:'( I am.

We've got a local fencer up here, Joe the Geek, and his prices are very reasonable [as fencing goes].

He also has a long cord which is attached to his nail gun. Pretty good nailing the palings onto the fence but other day he fired too soon and got Mrs Brown's cow. [only the names have been changed to protect the guilty]

Yeah, they rotate through one place every time they win back the serve, just like wt school. The libero goes off when it is his turn.

I think the actual rule is that he is not allowed to hit the ball when it is higher than the net.

Thanks Evo, thanks lauder.

I was thinking of scribbling some graffiti today, something like
"CB 4 Evo 4 Eva"

Not sure where to do it though. Maybe I'll just jot in down in a notepad somewhere.
