Samson Ryan

Not a single person at the club had seen JON play, and we took him with pick 8. How *smiled* were we as a club at that stage
Yeah that's not right. Whilst Frank was only part time he was doing WA and SA.
Miller was in charge of the Eastern States. They'd seen JON playing in colts in WA.

Well that's not exactly what I heard from a couple of Richmond people when we were aligned with Coburg.
That is absolute garbage that rumour. All Tiger recruiters at the time saw him play in the champs which was played in Victoria. He showed plenty of promise too during the carnival.
Maybe partially garbage, a couple of key people had not seen him

We only had two recruiters at the time.
Miller - who was trying to do everything and Frank, who'd been bought in part time by Miller.
We couldn't afford anything else. We may have had some volunteers, but think they came later (eg Shedda's dad helped a little in SA). Phantom was chomping at the bit to help.
Just on Miller, he didn't do a great job with our list, but he did get us a lot of money and helped turn that part of the business into something professional.
Don't think he got much credit, but he was there to start our turn around.

Correct and I believe that Miller was running Coburg as part of the deal with the alignment. Coburg weren't in great shape off field so he had a lot on his plate. A lot of the decision making was based on recommendations due to limited resources

Yep, we finally had more than 1 full-time recruiter starting in 2006, which is the same year we drafted our first future premiership player.

Hawthorn's dynasty was built while competing against clubs who didn't have a full cast of full-time recruiters (same for assistant coaches), so personally I count the Richmond 2017-2020 dynasty as the first true professional era dynasty of this sport.

Is Samson still on the list? Thought he had been delisted at least 200 times since Early May 🤣

Cmon guys there are much more interesting things to discuss and whinge about.

Whatever happened to the Phantom? It was like he just disappeared.

I believe he still has fans on the site. He gets mentioned every now and then.

For as eccentric as some of his ideas might have been, he helped get us our first rookie and tried to do lots of fund-raising to help the club back in the day. Not everything was great, but the heart was in the right place.

We only had 2 full time recruiters. There were several others recruiting, some part time (paid) and some volunteer. One of the volunteers was Richard Taylor who has made a great career in the recruiting side of things. Every Tiger recruiter witnessed Jon play in the champs.

Yeah Phantom one of the godfathers of PRE, anyone know what happened to him?
I had heard he wanted to get involved more with the Tigers, and when he didn't get what he wanted took his bat and ball and followed the Richmond Cricket club out of Punt Rd.
I'm not sure that's accurate in fairness, but I know he was involved in cricket for a while.

Spot on. the club actually said Frank was given the full time job on the back of his work in the 2005 draft.

Miller openly stated his prefered choice was Travis Varcoe. given they were instructed the priority would be running defender types.

Again i agree i believe with Frank and Miller we had 6 all up.

Later we did. But in 2005, paid recruiters was Miller and 0.5 of Frank. We got a team later. I remember at one of the draft nights asking the question why we didnhave a team as big as Collingwoods. The answer 1) Money 2) too many people create issues as there's too many opinions.
