Funny thing. Does he think robots grow the fruit? Or orphans? Or robot orphans?

I reckon Aldi sell robot orphan fruit. hydrogenated with palm oil.

I think we need a food thread

Terri Butler who just won Rudd's old seat in Brisbane is an ex student politician (head of the Townsville Uni SRC) and a union lawyer. In other words, on the face of it, a party hack. Everyone know whats wrong with the ALP, even the ALP know whats wrong, various internal reviews say 'we've got too many out-of-touch union lawyers and ex student politicians', but the party structure is obviously so entrenched they can't actually do anything about it. Disappointing

Up here in Brisbane she didn't say boo during the whole campaign, the bare minimum. Again its obvious why.

I hear ya K3. Newman is terrible. Attacking the judiciary at the moment. Lawyers who defend people he doesn't like are just as bad as the people they defend apparently. They don't quite get the separation of powers up here. He's the tragic result of the 2 party system, if one side is shown to be not up to it (the Bligh Government weren't), people tend to vote for the other side, regardless of philosophy or policies.

I was making a different point. I wan't the ALP to reform, to get better. Butler might be a great person, she might go on to be the best PM we've ever had (odds are against it of course). I was just making the point that there has been endless discussion about the problems with the ALP, being driven by the machine men, who are generally lawyers and ex student politicians who are insular and out of touch with the community. The in a high profile by-election, you would think a golden opportunity to signal change, (even if its not happening, at least try and look like its happening). But no, we get another ex student politician union lawyer.

The problem with politics is that no-one wants to be a politician except career politicians.

yeah. And the system will stink until that can be changed. Obviously the parties can't change it. I dunno what the solution is. Anyone with some fresh ideas gets crushed or sidelined by the party machine (see Turnbill, Garrett, Combet)

Hmmmm.... well can't really see that changing in the major parties at least. I'd give this person a go, it's harsh to condemn her just because she got elected. And there are plenty of politicians who do a good job for their electorate and in portfolio positions.

Yeah, pretty much agree with that mate. The good thing is that I think people are getting sick of the big parties, and their beholdence to certain 'groups' in Australia - Unions and Big Business. This was reflected, in the last election, as both major parties, and The Greens, losing votes to local independents. While the Libs think this is going to 'be the end of the joint', I think it rocks!

Has Abbott announced this multi million dollar Royal Commission into the unions purely to chase down Gillard? ???
Would hardly seem the time to be spending funds and resource into such an inquest and at the same time slashing budgets everywhere else.

Car industry, dead, buried, cremated. Well done Phony.

No more free cars for unskilled workers. Phantom will be pleased.

Seriously though a sad day... Not only Toyota goes but the supplier industries as well, I remember visiting a factory in Altona that made car seats for the Camry, used really nice JIT and other lean manufacturing techniques.

they're going for the jugular. Abbott might be a terrible PM but he's still an effective political attack dog. The ABC, unions, the royal commission into the pink batts is another, total witch hunt.

yeah I'll give her a go, but from where I sit, it doesn't look good.

Gotta love this little gem from Abbott's past.

Any government which makes it harder to manufacture cars is making it harder for us to continue to be a First World economy. - Abbott 2011.

must have been one of his unscripted, off-the-cuff remarks.

After reading a little bit more on this last night, all I can say is that this Govt's decisions, in relation to not supporting certain industries, has made me pretty sad and concerned for tens of thousands of people's livelihoods.

I am almost expecting Abbott & Co to next implement a lowering of, and hardening of the rules to get, the dole.

It is such a sad thing...

I wonder... if Labor wins the next Fed election, would they have the desire to, and any chance of getting Toyota to reverse their decision to pull out? Or is it all too late?

Excuse my naivety, but wouldn't these decisions from Ford, Holden & Toyota have been in the pipeline for years!
Mazda, Hyundai & imported Toyota's have been Australia's biggest sellers for many a year now.

Certainly they'd be reviewing their position in the market very regularly - as soon as the numbers don't work out, they'll leave. That's business. It doesn't mean they've said 5 years ago "we'll leave in 2015 but not tell anyone yet".

I think the locally made Camrys are big sellers in Australia.
