Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

There can be many theories why Fiorente was such long odds. Another one could be the poor winning history for non-winning horses from the previous year coming back for another crack at it. It's a pretty long bow to suggest it was because of the Waterhouse family and Oliver factor imo. The only place I've heard that mentioned is on here. It would be interesting to know if it's why so few on here tipped/backed Fiorente. My reason is silly at such juicy odds. I just rarely pick favourites. Like you saying Fiorente ticking all the right boxes was reason to be wary. In reality, as hindsight shows, there was very good reason to pick him.

I just said it might be the reason. The Waterhouses don't bother me personally, but as you've posted yourself, there is quite a stench surrounding Damien Oliver. He's no longer racing's pin-up jockey.

Spent the next 30 seconds scanning the form guide to work out who it was and thought it must've been Ethiopia. Spoiled the call for mine.

i thought it was Ethiopia too. Real balls up by Milesy.

felt like Essendon winning the 2014 flag to me. Robbie is grubby as hell. Ollie's wasnt a misdemenour. Tom is a big noting spiv ("but WHY cant I back mummys horse to win a million dollars?" smacks of out of touch smart arse to me). Gai just *smile* me for no real reason (it aint gender, big gillard fan, loved sheila laxton).

I don't think it's as predictabale as gollywog does.

fair enough. I guess if it was as predictable as I say, I'd have a yacht in St.Tropez, instead of an 89 Landcruiser in Lismore. It just seems like when I was kid, The Cup involved big dividends ($50K trifectas) and smokeys getting up. It doesnt seem that way anymore. Maybe that reflects a society that is more informed about everything?? My dad rules a line through anything over 20-1. The data from the last 20 years suggest this is a percentage approach. Im a bit old fashion, naive and broke I suppose. I want more romance out of The Cup. I backed Ethiopia at 70-1. I lost my money.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

In Greg Miles' defence, the field was strung out and he was calling the front horses and Verema was at the back. She would have been well out of the field of view of his binocs - hundreds of metres behind - when he went through to the back of the field. By the time he worked it out after the race - with horses spread out all over the place near the 2000 metre mark where she broke down - I assume Ch7 was already interviewing Gai, Ollie etc.

Yes I realise what you said Lee. My comment wasn't intended to personalise it. Just a discussion about the idea in general.

I don't recall mentioning a stench about Oliver.

I mentioned Leysy's comment below. If it was such a massive story and nothing eventuated from it I'm happy to believe it might have been more Chinese whispers than fact. The innuendo and speculation doesn't affect my opinion of him in any way. As for his betting scandal as I said I reckon the difference with him and others is he got caught. I also don't think any less of Craig Munce, to the point I wouldn't back a horse he was on, for his fall from grace either. I reckon racing, and most sport that's gambled on, has a pretty dodgy underside.

Ouch.

Biggest story in the countries history if he is guilty of what leysy has heard.

Obviously nothing was proven. He was investigated and re-investigated by police, and quietly dropped as the face of the spring carnival a few years ago because of it. He has obviously reconciled with his wife since.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

Yep nothing was proven but there just mightn't have been that much substance either for all we know. If it was a chance it could be "the biggest story" in Australia's history it's very surprising nothing would come of it. I'm not going to hang anyone based on rumour and innuendo especially arter investigation and re-investigation by police didn't result in any charges.

Fair enough, though he hasn't overcome the taint from the betting incident IMO.

Re: Thoroughbred Horse Racing [Merged]

I wouldn't have a clue about the taint. Haven't read a word about it. He's certainly been it pretty good riding form no matter how he's perceived by others.

I'd take your word over many gdog but have to wonder why there were no charges. Why was the criminal investigation dropped if there was the slightest bit of fact behind the rumours?

Yeah I like Distinctly Secret, as well as Pentastic.

And I'm going to have a go at a couple of roughies as well, Fawaz and She's Archie.

She's Archie one of my favourite horses who gave me a good collect in the 2003 Melbourne Cup has a daughter running in the Oaks tomorrow --------- May's Dream.
I reckon she will stay longer than a Mother in Law. I'm going to back her to win and take her in quinella's and trifecta's.

In what way? If the detectives or investigators are so corrupt that $$ can influence such a serious investigation in any way the matter should be re-opened and, along with Oliver, they should come under serious scrutiny themselves.

Quinella with the favorite is probably the way to go mate.

Re: Melbourne Cup

Makybe Divas little sister is trying to win the Queen Liz on Saturday. And she may just be the one on the rise to knock off the ones ending a long spring campaign.

PRE Punters Club

Forgive me if this has been done before, or already exists, but any interest in a punters club?

It could work something like this. Im happy to administer. We assemble 10 or 20 punters. each week, one punter has say $10 on a punt he/she likes. can be anything. Gees gees, dishlickers, footy as long as we can all follow it. If you win, you punt again, if you lose, onto the next punter. For example, I'd go first and have $10 on beanie for the rising star at 50-1, so I wouldnt punt again and my punt would last the season.

Any winnings get deposited somewhere transparent we work out, maybe with tigersnake as a second signature? We could donate proceeds to the FTF.

If we get 20 punters, its only going to cost you about $20 a year.

Any punters interested? TGW
