My son's cricket academy session is going to keep me busy on Saturday, so that probably leaves the Sunday game at Coburg between Calder & Murray as the best game. A great opportunity to look at Muston, Carlile for the first time, and to look at Drum & Prior again.

Hope to see you there.

Walked away from today's game elated in one respect and very disappointed in another.
These being:
1. Beau Muston is extremely good. Better than Deledio looked in 2004. He could end up a better player than Deledio.
2. I've watched a few rounds of junior footy this season and I'm starting to sorry that year's pool of big men is really not as rich as last years.

Had a pleasant day. Arrived a bit late, halfway through the 1st quarter. But seeing that I left Doncaster North at 1.50pm, I thought I did well to get to be seated inside the Coburg City Oval by 2.15.

Met up with Greg Miller at half time. He was equally impressed with Muston. Greg introduced me to Peter Kennedy, the head honcho of the Northern Knights, and Neil Connell, the coach of the same. With the trials having begun last week we reviewed the likely players. The big point is that Vic Metro & Country are really struggling to find sufficient quality in their big men for this year's carnival. There are the obvious ones, Fraser & Dowler. Maybe Warnock as a ruckman. (I've already posted about these.) But apart from them...? Peter said that he liked Matt Spangher, 18yo, 193, 84 of the Eastern Ranges. I havent seen him yet.

Anyway back to the game.
In a nutshell, Murray took out an early lead in the first quarter, and grew it by game's end.
They won by about 15goals to 5. Calder had no one to kick to. They look a shadow of the side that has dominated this comp for the last few years. Murray have obviously improved from last season.

For Murray:
Beau Muston, 18yo, 188, 71 - a great turn of pace when running out of the centre. Nice vertical leap. Doesnt mind backing into packs. Kicks long and kicks straight. But somehow no one is talking about him. Either everyone is keeping him under their hat, or he's not that well known yet.

Marcus Drum, 18yo, 190, 82 - Disappointing. After last year, I was looking forward to seeing a potential FB/CHB. His football is good enough, but at best I think he'll be a tall HBF in the Andy Kellaway mould. Not a top 10 draft choice.

Alipate Carlile, 18yo, 191, 103 - Also disappointing. Reminds me of Chris Lamb, ex-Melbourne, who played for Murray as a FB 5 years ago. Big thighs, not very mobile, doesnt get off the ground. Dont think he's played much football.

Tiarnan Halliday, 18yo, 191, 76 - Skinny forward. Nice leap, kicks long & straight. Went for everthing.

Also Adam Prior - I like Prior, but he plays as a CHF. He is 6'2" and that too small for an AFL CHF, and he has insufficient pace for a HFF. He's a junior champion and will probably be a country champion.

Calder:
Their smalls looked busy, but not in the same class as May, Ezard, and the 2 Jesse Smiths.

Bowes, Douglas, Caruso, Gordon & Gazzo all try hard, but none are outstanding. And they've got absolutely no one to kick it to.

I heard that Gippsland had a good win over Qld in Brisbane. I must see them next week, if possible.

Thanks for the wrap of the Murray and Calder game Phantom. Am surprised by your assessment of Muston, I must admit I haven't seen him since last year, I am looking forward to seeing him soon. Disappointing to hear your assessemnt on Marcus Drum, although we have discussed his lack of height before. Interesting Tanner said it was his best game for the year. As we have discussed before, Tanner has been playing Drum midfield/HFF and I get the impression it was his first full game at CHB. I read in our local Drum took 21 marks....is this right?? As a side issue, I am hoping to get to Optus on the 12th of June, hope to have a chat if possible?

As said, I cannot find fault with Drum's football ability. Takes a great mark, reads the ball well, kicks long and accurately. But as a key defender you really need to be 6'3" to 6'5".

I'd love Drum to be a part of a successful Tiger side, but he's only big enough to take the 3rd tall maybe. A top 10 choice, maybe with some, not with me. A useful replacement for Andy Kellaway, a second to third round pick, definitely.
