Where and when haved clubs fallen off the perch.
Richmond. Graham Richmond dies and we had no succession plan. Took 30 years to recover.
Collingwood. Malthouse/Buckley feud?
Geelong. 40 years without a premiership.
Carlton. Cheating the salary cap. Still haven't recovered.
Essendon. Sheedy kept on too long, then the Drugs.
St. Kilda. Moving to Seaford.
West Coast. Ben Cousins not being moved on.
Western Bulldogs. Recovering from going broke.
Hawthorn. Took success for granted in the 90's?
North Melbourne. Didn't go to Gold Coast?
Adelaide. Too much power in a market?
Port Adelaide. Too much history? Sense of injustice.
Freemantle. Poor recruiting early on.
Brisbane. Too good, then poor management?
Gold Coast. Poor decision.
Sydney. Geofftey Edelstein.
GWS. Developing
Melbourne. Poor management.

Norm Smith won 6 premierships as coach of Melbourne between 1955 and 1964, including 5 out 6, 55-56-57-59 and 60.
They sacked him in 1965 and they have gone from a powerhouse to the outhouse.

Your memory of GR is very kind. Romantic view. Left the club a shambles due to ego. Thought he was bigger than the club in the end. Trading out Whale Roberts, Francis Jackson and Teasdale for Petura and the Collingwood raids more accurately describe our failures

Yeah, the rot with the Tigers started long before GR died. As DA mentions he really started it with the Pitura trade.

yeah, this is old ground. G Richmond's buy the biggest talent from the other clubs and hang the expense strategy was no longer viable, and we kept doing it in the early 80s which screwed us for the rest of the decade.

Was that the single worst decision in footy history? I have a mate who is a Melbourne supporter and old enough to remember their last flag. Apparently this was the decision which led to Melbourne Football Club taking control of their own affairs and separating from the MCC. There are not words to describe just how dreadful that decision was. Sack a coach who had won 6 premierships in 10 years and the previous year? WTF??

I remember the Pitura business, what a mess. That 1982 Grand Final and the raiding of other teams was not only short term thinking but also not realising just how the game was changing. GR stayed on too long and we just about went bust. Took so long to recover. We certainly went wrong and it cost us decades in the wilderness. Not as bad as Melbourne though.

Good to see a stable and smart administration running the show now, we need to become a permanent powerhouse, we have the members, we have the supporter base, we need better facilities and we need long term thinking.
