If I read that correctly and it includes Balmey staying at the Club too - well that’s a great result.

Be interested to know what others think.
Maybe we're unloading some of Balmey's duties to prolong his 'career' at the club.

Apart from probably needing to give these guys a pay rise to ward off other clubs, I see Tim Livingston and Blair Hartley looking after the nuts and bolts and Balmey running interference with the so called expert journos and analysts!

The rest of the industry can't figure out what we do now..... just our new way of adding to their confusion..... should be fun, can't wait!

Who ever is marked to take over Balme, hope they are taking notes on how it’s done right.

Balmey being set up to take over from Benny?

Think they would be going for a younger man for Benny's role than Balmey but agree it is sounding more likely Gale will take on the Commissioner's role in the next couple of years

Isn't Balmey 68? I doubt he has many ambitions beyond seeing a few more Richmond premierships before he retires.

As long as it is not a case of being pushed aside like he was at collingwood, I am very happy with this. I expect it would prolong his tenure and he becomes the wise old sage.

We don't know much about Blair other than his results, but Tim Livingstone appears to be a great operator and clearly is trusted by dimma.

smart move, we can give everyone pay rises by changing Balmes title and removing him from the footy soft cap.

I initially thought that too, however the statement reads that Balmey will still be heavily involved in the football side of things.
I've always wondered how Ken Wood, who I imagine is the man head office gets to rule on these things, actually does just that..... how do you differentiate time spent on footy dept matters and stuff outside that?
I would think that if there's an available rort going on, a high profile leader from a very nearby club would be actively employing it.
Maybe it's old school and you punch a card on your way in and out!

Looks like other clubs have been coming hard for our people.

It sounds like they have both been given well-deserved pay rises. Balme's salary has been moved partially out of the football department to pay for them. As long as he genuinely has duties to perform outside the footy department there should be no issues. Maybe he gets to sit on the Allied Leisure Board or something.

Yep, this has the footy department salary cap written all over it.

It could be all of that. As well as prolonging Balmey's career, it also shows respect and the esteem he's held in imo.
Lighten his work load and responsibilities by sharing it with Hartley and Livingstone, grooming them for the future and maybe he's looking at other duties within the club. As with good organisations they want good operators to challenge themselves in other directions. Maybe it's what Balmey desires after doing "the same old" role for quite a number of years and the club is accomodating and being respectful to him. No doubt they're confident he'll make it a success.
Win win for all

I like it. Elder statesman, emeritus professor, footy dept mentor and advisor, media safe hands, sponsor charmer. He can do it all comfortably. Perfect

As Balmeys final act, which is hopefully a decade away, I'd like to see him drink 20 pots at an AFL gala gig, join in The Nutbush on the dancefloor, vomit all over former CEO Gil McLachlan and theatrically kick him up the arse on the spin, pick him up off the deck like a handbag and throw him into the DJ pit.

Just as the passionfruit icing on a glorious CV.
