Yep great work sets us up beautifully for a bit of a mini rebuild.
That's pretty much where my thoughts lie as well.
With so many kids missing out on this year due to the coroner virus, the most important thing about next years draft is that it will run very very deep.
For all the fun we have in regard to the quality and depth of our list. There's a couple players starting to get long in the tooth that might just about be done after next season. There's also a few " promising " youngsters still to consolidate and a few more who are purely positional insurance at best.

Would be a perfect time to hit the draft hard and freshen up the list with a strong, long draft hand. Perhaps even trade out a reasonably decent premiership player for an extra early pick or two.

Will be interesting to see how the rankings of players changes as we progress. So much could potentially change, particularly for Vic based players given some would have developed significantly physically since last time they played.

I’m not convinced at all we’d want to take those six picks. Max five, potentially even four. Will be somewhat dependent on what happens with list changes I guess.

I’m sure in an ideal world we’d trade one of our picks to upgrade to an early 1st & land a mid & KPF with our two picks. Then round out with another KPP, an outside mid/flanker, saving the last pick for best available or a wildcard. Either way I’m confident the club will land is in a good spot.

Amazing to have won three out of the last four premierships & have six picks in an upcoming draft!!
Good points TJ.
How many picks we take will be dictated by (more) AFL rule changes, who gets senior opportunities, performs well in the seniors or in VFL, who might get a long term injury, who might retire, who might continue to pursue the late night kebab.
Everyone is saying that it's going to be a draft loaded with talent so it would be a real opportunity for a couple of upgrades of our fringe players.

Which makes Norths drafting this year even more strange. Draft 2 very good mids with their first 2 picks, whilst they already have a group of good upcoming midfielders, when you have a top rated tall available. I'd think North are in pole position to get the spoon next year so another top rated midfielder looks likely. They will end up like the Pies, a highly rated midfield with no-one to kick it to.

Its no surprise that very few teams win a premiership without a dominant tall forward. Even the Dogs had one for the day in 2016.
According to Norf fans their KPF stocks are fine. They are pinning their hopes on Comben & Xerri as targets. Comben is apparently highly rated within the club. Tragic.

Haha good on them, they are delusional. Putting all their eggs in the basket of a player picked at 31 who has never played a game, 1 picked at 72 and played 4 games and 1 picked at 73 thats played 29 games.

Big difference between forwards taken that late and those taken in the top 20.

From the afl sight.
"It made for a rather cruisy night for the reigning premiers, who now hold two first-round picks, two second-round picks and two third-round picks in what is tipped to be a loaded 2021 draft class". Can set us up beautifully.

We traded for "a first-round pick", I understand, eZ. They get #1 they can trade down or out.

No you trade for a specific 1st round pick, they can't change that after. We traded for Geelongs 1st round pick so will get that regardless of whether they finish 1st or 18th. If they want to swap that for an alternative acquired 1st rounder then that would be another trade.

All trades for future picks were expressed as 'a first round pick' or whatever. Not sure what it means but if it means they can trade down and give the remnants, that would have been going on for a while.

Can we get some clarity on this?

surely, if you club A trades for club B's first round pick, and club B finishes last,

Club A gets pick 1?

But then I can see Dyer'er's Loophole clearly

Club B trades #1 for #2 and #18 and hands over #18.

Jeez.

there is clearly a significant difference between 'first pick' and 'first round pick'

I hate how lawyers can make a million bucks out of one word.

While it always states "1st round pick" the details always state which club that pick is tied to.

We will get Geelongs 1st rounder next year whether it be No. 1 or No. 18 or whatever in between. Thsats the risk Geelong takes. We had access to that pick once it was traded and could have traded it again. Geelong no longer have access to that pick so cannot trade with it.

How can they trade something they no longer have?

If geelong have only 1 first round pick next year, it would already be traded to us before the trade period begins so they wouldnt be able to downgrade something they are no longer in hold of.

Astute interpretation Halsey and Posh

just to clarify and explore further .......

currently Geelongs 2021 first round pick doesn't exist.

so they've traded something that doesn't exist?

that in itself isnt a complex legal concept, options and futures have been traded for as long as Joseph the carpenters marriage went unconsummated.

so you reckon, by the letter of AFL law,

Richmond have actually traded pick 20 in 2020 for the first pick in the 2021 draft that is allocated to Geelong?

a hypothetical: Geelong FC become so bereft of confidence and judgment after being repeatedly demoralised by Richmond FC, that they sought to gain and edge to overcome them and engaged a sport science 'weapon' and began a performance enhancing drugs program for season 2021. They get caught and the AFL suddenly becomes decisive, accountable and transparent (yeah, ok, I accept that is more science fiction than a hypothetical), strip Geelong of all premiership points, relegating them to last position on the AFL ladder, and prohibits Geelong from participating in the 2021 draft.

Would Richmond receive the first pick that Geelong never had allocated and were not entitled to?

In that hypothesis Ease I would hazard a guess that the AFL would strip the next year draft eg 2022 which would penalise the infringing club and not interfere in an existing contract ( trade of picks)

I would agree with that, seems a logical solution.

Yes you are right its a pick they don't have yet, but they describe it as 1st round pick TIED TO GEELONG. So it essentially says that its a pick that is tied to the finishing position of Geelong in 2021.
