Thoughts:
As most have said, we were Rusty as hell. However I am more concerned about our inability to land a successful tackle. It seemed we were a little too small/light down back, as Carlton just ran through many of our tackles in the first half.
Our forwardline needs some work. Several times I saw two of our players trying to mark the same ball - including Marlion and Castagna trying to outmark Lynch and Reiwoldt. They need to up the situational awareness - if those two boys are flying for a mark, stay down. I even saw Lynch and Reiwoldt contest the same ball a couple of times - All stuff we can work on and improve. For 75 inside 50s, we didn't hurt the opposition enough.
Several of the guys who seemed to (from Caesar's reports) be in the rehab group looked off the pace of the game. This will improve.

"Stand" rule. Just ....get.......the........*smile*........out of the game. So stupid a defender must stay like a well trained dog, whilst someone can basically run past them.
Inconsistency in umpiring - remember they'll be rusty too. About what I expected for the most part, but agree the HTB rule was no where near officiated well enough. Multiple times players were tackled and did 360+ spins and were not penalised. Either we've changed the interpretation (again) or these guys got it wrong.

Carlton - They have a lot to like. I think their endurance will catch them out, they simply couldn't run out quarters and couldn't do much in the fourth at all. When they got tired, they turned it over or had basic skill errors......lots. However they have some players who I'd pinch in a heartbeat (also WTF is Mark Murphy still playing for. I wondered who they'd recruited called Murphy - just go already mate. No premiership for you).

Gamestyle - It seemed really fast. Lots of "coast to coast" running with very little intervention from either side at times. I predict this will change in 2-3 weeks time. Players will start to get tired, the game will slow down and coaches who realise their cattle can't play 4 quarters like this will resort to flooding to get around the "stand" rule.

Never felt like we were going to lose last night if we did enough. Each time we seemed to back off, they'd surge and we'd respond. Our chaos ball looked a bit restricted with the new rule (fancy that) but I never thought we were going to lose.

Probably but I can't see them keeping up that gamestyle, it's taxing. Don't know about others but at the ground I didn't enjoy the gamestyle. Way to free flowing and real pressure taken right out of the game. Was gettung far too tedious. There was alot of standing off your own player to allow easy transition. Happy to be there though after 18 months.

Agree with this, they couldn't keep up against us and we are a month behind them in training.

Will be a few kids getting a run this year. If that pace continues without the ability to rotate their will be some injuries in red time. At one stage Dusty wasn’t happy to have to stay on the bench.

The pace is always much quicker early in the season. It won't continue.

I'm not worried at this stage, we don't want a repeat of 2018. We need to pace ourselves and we did that last night. I agree we always looked like we had their measure. The only real worry is the tackling with our team carrying markedly less weight., I couldn't believe how small Rioli looked.

I agree. Parts of the game was like watching basketball... End to end action, where if felt the only defence really occurred around the 3 point line (defensive 50m arcs).
The higher number of uncontested marks is nothing to get excited about for me , i like competition for the ball whether it be in the air or on the ground ,

high scoring . low scoring , im not that fazed , i like to see players competing against each other

I enjoyed the game and thought it was pretty typical round 1.

errors, fatigue, and therefore space.

the man on the mark rule reminds me of a game we used to play at party when we were kids called 'freeze'

I think they should extend it so that the player cant move any part of their body, not even their face.

I'd love to beat someone in a grand final after a 50m penalty awarded for blinking.

One thing I forgot to mention above, but I know it hardly needs a mention - umpiring as inconsistent as usual and free kick count as unbalanced as usual. Some things just don't change. What really pisses me off is when you see two virtually identical incidents and the decision is different. They really need to get more consistency.

The other thing I should mention is tickets on phones suck, no, that's being generous. Unbelievable how bad the technology is as people try in vain to get the ticket reading machine to actually read their ticket. This has got to improve, and improve maybe 1000% if it is going to be a viable way of getting people into and out of the ground at breaks. Too slow, doesn't work half the time, just ridiculous. Imagine that with 90,000 people instead of 50,000.

That is the last time I attempt to use my phone as a ticket, back to print outs for me. A printed bar code or QR code just works, quickly and efficiently. On the phone it is a joke.

I’m a deadset tech dinosaur David and usually have issues with this sort of thing. But last night it was a breeze; sailed through the gates without a hitch.

For them, Walsh broke tackles at will, has lifted. and they seem to have a lot of extremely one-sided players.
We tackled poorly as a team last night. Carlton players broke and stood up in way too many tackles.

I think that issue will be resolved at the business end of the season.

Why dosent champion data have a broken tackle number?
Because i reckon Caddy conceded 5.
That was the worse tackling game ive seen us play in a very long time.
He conceded 2 in 10 seconds on the members wing at one stage and shortly after hacked a panicked kicked out of the backline to a Carlton player which lead to a goal.

He had a poor game I thought. Won’t hold his spot playing like that.

not thrilled about the game. I thought our team defence was poor. carlton went coast to coast on numerous occasions. not a lot of pressure and only 40 tackles.

But it's only R1 and we won;t be playing like this in 2 months.

And Dusty... just imagine if he finds a way to go up another level? our main rivals must be shi.tting themselves at what they saw last night.
