2) the fact that we have been so dominant in recent years both on the scoreboard and with our pressure and intensity leads to the big brother / little brother effect where the dad pulls up the big brother if he's playing too rough and let's the little brother get away with the same and more. we can take the rough stuff we've been dishing up.

So why did Geelong and Hawthorn get armchair rides during their era's? The bulldogs got a good run for a while after 2016 as well.

Coz they had so many superstars and all australian talent whereas we have Dusty and a bunch of role players and a defensive system. Just ask the media.

i would have thought that to protected by the deliberate rush rule you would already need to be in possession of the ball. Robbie Gray took possession of the ball for the sole purpose of rushing it through. Why was he given benefit of doubt.

I’d be disappointed if Richmond aren’t taking up some of these issues to the AFL behind closed doors.
And If if the stats are true that DeBoy paid 11 to 0 frees for Port, questions surely need to be asked.

I grew up in the era of watch Peter (perfect) Hudson play
this was a long time ago , I was primary school age so my recollections maybe be distorted
but it seemed so unjust it etched in my mind
this day out at Waverly, Barry Richardson was giving him a bath ? 1 goal to half time, that was very rare
On the stroke of half time Hudson let him fly for a mark and hit him with a punch in the kidneys
and he did it with every once of energy he cause muster
Richardson was a basket case and stretchered off in immensese pain
I'm pretty sure the field umpire saw but was 200% sure the goal umpire saw it
the crowd were yelling at him to report Hudson , my recollection was he was embarrassed , but he didn't report Peter perfect

roll forward to more current times and Ablett Jnr was untouchable and not only showered with free it took 3 reportable incidents in 4 weeks before he was rubbed out

both Hudson & Ablett jnr were born in the free kick tree

for what ever reason Richmond players aren't and that graphic is the 5th year in a row we sit at the bottom of that table
Richo would carry on like a pork chop and hardly got a free
Jack similar but he has pulled his head in and now gets some frees (take it )

for what ever reason Lynch gets a lot of soft frees , very un Richmond like , did he earn the pitty of the umps at the GC ?

Dusty , after his brownlow , it was like someone flicked a switch , he started getting frees , often when he's down forward , just a tug on the jumper and the whistle blows

I don't know what causes the bias against , we haven't played dirty or really on the edge

But when your side is down its all too easy to blame the umpires and abuse them , and all clubs , all levels of footy , players do it
Trouble is some of the umps have huge egos , think Razor Ray , get under their skin and you'll pay for it for years

Did we have some guys who were too sharp with the tongue back in the 2000-2010 period ?

I'm hoping like hell , that our good behavouir continues the reasons to be against us fade and we rise to the middle of the pack

Whatever we think the reason is the stats are clear. Our record on free kick differential since 2017 is as follows ( per AFL tables )

2017 469-528 18th in the league
2018 421-543 18th
2019 461-490 14th
2020 314-384 18th
2021 67-93 18th

This is a trend which surely deserves a conversation with the AFL.

It deserved a conversation 3 years ago. Its too late now, they'll just say its a confirmed trend that reflects our club not the umpires.

Chronic, if not systemic, bias.
The problem with it of course is that if it gets raised we are whingers and that is not our way as a club.

The facts are also that this has happened at the same time we have become a good team. Somewhere in that there is cause and effect , whether that be bias or the way we play we can draw our own conclusions.

Was watching the Geelong v Melbourne game and there was a classic situation we see every week.

A player from each side is chasing for a loose ball. The Melbourne player is in front, the Geelong player around half a step behind. The Geelong player grabs the Melbourne player, it isn't an actual tackle, but it is impeding the player by grabbing the player. The problem arises because the Geelong player's action in impeding the Melbourne player is not penalised.

It is what happens next which is the problem.

The Melbourne player should have received a free kick for holding the man, since he didn't, he tries to gather the ball and is immediately tackled. He has no prior so we watch the umpires stand around while congestion gathers, and we get a ball up (yet another stoppage, I thought they wanted less of these).

If they actually applied the rules and paid holding the man, then the Geelong player could only impede the Melbourne player by bumping not by grabbing the Melbourne player. So either he grabs the Melbourne player and it is a free to the Melbourne player, or the Geelong player doesn't grab the Melbourne player and can only tackle once the Melbourne player takes possession of the ball - then either the Melbourne player disposes of the ball, is tackled and it is either a free for holding the ball or a ball up if there was no prior opportunity to dispose of the ball.

The point of this is that the impact of not paying a free kick for holding the man, of trying to reduce the number of free kicks, is to make stoppages more likely and congestion more likely.

It is the AFL's very actions, by trying to reduce the number of free kicks and not enforcing the holding the man rule, which has been one of the causes of congestion and increased stoppages. I'm sure the coaches have contributed too with defensive strategies, but the AFL needs to sort out the way the rules are adjudicated.

DS
I agree with all of that except the ball-up if the tackled player doesn't dispose of it. We need to go back to players being aware they will be tackled and so knocking the ball on instead of taking possession. This prior opportunity is some *smile* started by Gerard Whately's dad Tim Lane. I'm not sure why we listen to nerds who never played the game.

We could be -30 every week and I won't care as long as we're winning.

We probably coughed up five goals from our own preventable mistakes, so the result was within our control even on an ordinary night.

I've been arguing with people on social media all day, and a couple of people have asked me the following question... And I am hoping someone can answer.

How do we know Deboy gave 10 free kicks to Port and 0 to Richmond? Is there a link to this stat?

So true. Kermit and his dad.

Imagine a dinner party with those two trying to outdo each other with big words and exact pronunciation? You wouldn't need a thesaurus but you'd want some ear plugs.

Seriously how does the media have any influence on the rules ...ridiculous, the *smile* these Journos come up with is generally just impulsive and reeks of little understanding of playing the game .

I think we are the worst we’ve been with umps not having a ‘feel’for the game

Reckon I have could have em speechless with my use of the English language at a dinner party :))

I wonder how many more games, in this period, we would’ve won if we’d been kissed on the deck like Collingwood .

Someone's claiming 10-0, someone on Twitter claimed 14-3. Not sure I'd go to war with these.

Tim Lane can't even pronounce 'quarter'. He says 'corter'.

Mincey has the amazing ability to verbalise punctuation, namely full stops, commas, semi-colons, colons and ellipses, which funnily enough all sound the same: "ttttsssss".
