was it the hard disk or some other problem? If the drive is OK you could pull it and get the data from it. Entering all the votes again will take a long time I reckon

Start with the power supply. Although a dying power supply can take the board with it...

In the meantime you should be able to pull the disk out and plug it into another PC (as a second drive, not the main drive) and recover the contents. An external HDD docking station/enclosure is the go. About $60 last time I looked.

You can do it even cheaper if you only want to pull the data off and ditch the drive, connector like this would do the job. About $8 delivered. Just make sure the connector matches the pins on the drive.

OK best bet is to open it up and have a look if you have the tools.. we can then recommend a connector sammy. There is always the risk that the SDD is fried, but worth a try unless you prefer keying all the votes in again. Could be other stuff on the disk you want to save as well

Are you in Melbourne? Me or another technical Tiger could help once we are out of lockdown. I'm inner city.

Would probably try to find out what's wrong with the PC first. Docking station idea is only if you want to recover the data quickly and already have another PC to transfer it to.

CPL used to charge $50 to diagnose a fault, with the cost of any required parts and servicing on top of that.

Not sure what sort of "mini PC" you have, but if it's just the power supply at fault, it might only set you back another $50 to get up and running again. Motherboard is more serious...

If going the docking station route, this is the kind of thing you want - cheap and nasty but it will do to recover your data.

Stick the drive in the slot, plug it into another computer via USB cable and you should be able to recover your stuff. (Reckon I would pay $27 to avoid wading through all the votes again. :)) )

If it's a tiny mini it may have an externsl brick power supply.

If you toss a make or model number we can probably guide you through it. If there is no power when you turn it on then definitely power related. If it powers up but nothing happens, or odd beeps, then a board or component has probably died

So does the PC not power up at all (no lights) or does it power up but nothing happens? If there is no power I'd take it down to the nearest PC/Electronics store (dunno what's open these days) and see if they have a compatible power supply to test/buy.

PCs are pretty good at isolating power surges these days, I'd think there's a fair chance a change of power supply will have you going again, assuming you know how to screw that M.2 drive back into the mobo. :)

That's gold Sammy.

Next step is percussive maintenance.

You'll need the right tool.

Have you got one of these in the cutlery drawer?
