Well if you'd bothered watching the GF Craig it is a pretty fair assessment of Petracca no matter how much we wish it weren't the case
Yeh he’s as close to dusty as there is.

theres a lot of bitterness on this thread. 3 flags in 4 years and still can’t celebrate other teams great play and success? Dees play a great brand in the manner we did. Hope we can meet them at full strength next year.

Interesting observation. We saw the Richmond onballers fatigued this year, partly due to longer seasons and the frenetic game style. Wonder how long Melbourne can get away with using the same set of players for the vast majority of the season.
Melbourne’s test will come when they get injuries. They basically had none this year. Certainly none to their best players. Much like us in 2017 but we were then decimated in 2019 & 2020 but got most back in time for the finals. How would Melbourne go with Petracca, Oliver and Gawn missing big chunks of the season?

But if they stay fit like this year they’ll be enormously hard to beat. They are a very powerful unit.

was just saying to snake, wouldn't a full strength Tigers V FS Dees GF in 2022 be something'?

Nank/Soldo V Gawn/Jackson
Dusty V Trac
JG V Oliver
Wanganeen-Milera V Langdon
Marlion V Brayshaw
Cotchy V Viney
Tom V May
Grimes V Fritch
Melee V Pickett
MRJ V Bowey

It'll be a doozy.

try as I might, I cant find a suitable matchup for Lever??? Lets get Towner back for Chol? or maybe Jacob Van Rooyen

One of the amazing things about that premiership, was, apart from Fritch, how entirely *smile* the Dees forward line was in a 74 point drubbing?

Apart from motivation, that's their next big test... if Petracca or Oliver went down injured - they are not winning anything. However youth is on their side.

If 2017 was defined by midgets,

2021 was defined by a plodding, underperforming forward line.

somehow, Goodwin has romped a premiership without a forward line.

Putting Fritch aside,

Brown, McDonald, Neale-Bullen, Pickett, Spargo

did absolutely nothing of consequence, when it counted.

thats 4/6ths, or 2/3rds of a forward line that aren't much good at the best of times, none of who played well in the GF, 1/6th a star who completely and utterly choked and had no influence on the game, and 1/6th All Australian who played a blinder.

Dees have convincing, emphatically, deservedly won the premiership,

without a forward line.

Are forward lines dead? Do you just need 1 forward?

is the game for goal kicking mids and dominant ruckman and a clinical backline?

sure, its not hard to argue we nailed the plodding, dysfunctional forward line part this year.

backline still tight. we have the ruckman.

It does seem clear to me now,

that we need, a piñata if you like,

of ball winning, goal kicking mids.

*smile* loads of them. lets draft 5 of them this year

That is a good point tottie. Oliver and Petracca must have had high TOG. Almost a return to playing your best players in the most important positions for as long as possible.
122 and 124 minutes respectively out of 129. Absolutely spot on assessment.

Luke Jackson not getting the plaudits he deserves for one of the great ruckmens grand final games.

hes more Nank than Nank.

I'll have to check the replay, but I reckon he was in the ruck

for that 3 goal 30 seconds at the end of the 3rd q.

Bullied Footscray all night.

Hes my new favourite non-tiger.
Yep, Jackson turned the game when he went into the ruck halfway through the 3rd quarter. He rucked until 3/4 time, the Dees slammed on 7 goals, game over.

I havnt watched the replay, but guessed he must have been in the guts,

when Dees went at a goal per 10 seconds.

incredible.

can you indulge us with some insights from Burswood TMan?

how was the vibe? How were the Dees fans?

amazing.

another bit of Goodwin simplicity genius,

as JB and Tot said,

keeping your best players, in the guts, all game.

obviously they need to be absurdly fit and durable,

but yeah.

I think we are really learning from this flag.

They make the most of what they have, like all good teams.

Midfield rotations? What midfield rotations? They use one of the two ruckmen, Petracca, Oliver and Viney in the guts. Harmes occasionally tags someone, Neal-Bullen plays the Lambert role and allows Petracca to go forward and that is it. Brayshaw plays wing, Jones was dropped and left out, Jordan played early in the season as an inside mid but he is out of the team now.

They have a very rigid structure, within the constraints of the modern game which demands all players run up and down the ground all day. Their defenders always defend and stay behind the ball. Salem is always the running outlet from defence, the forwards are always forward and presenting as targets.

And all of the best players play “on the ball” all day. Just like in Under 12s.

Congratulations to them. They have turned Gawn, Petracca and Oliver into some of the fittest players in the competition. That is seriously smart work.
Great assessment Tottie.
There's a lot of talk about them becoming a powerhouse but I'm not so sure.
The modern game is taking it's toll on players faster than ever. Especially midfielders.
Like all teams ultimately much reliance to success is on their core. Will only take an injury or two to those guys & they'll come back to the pack pretty quickly.
Much has to go right personnel wise & the Dees had that this year at the right time.

For me rapt Dees won. Late dad's team.

Read today too Steven May played with a torn hamstring. Happened initially in the PF. More damage in 2nd Q. Great effort.

Did the sub come on? Pity if he didn't as game was done mid last Q.

Yes, they got a "first round" compensation for Frawley, which meant immediately after their first round pick - pick 2. So Frawley compensation turned out 3.
Franklin was lost by the Hawks, to a club paying on average $1m a year. They got "end of first round", so basically after their pick being premiers. Compensation has been a joke since day 1.
Yes, it was contrived. It was there to lift the Dees up. It's why I get very little joy out of last night (apart from Neale Daniher). The whole thing was for the AFL to make contrived premiers.
Just like the AFL didn't like to perpetuate a Hawks or Tigers dynasty, they've wanted to manufacture a Dees and Giants Premiership.
Almost all boxes ticked Gil.
Exactly right. It's all worked now. What's the next gift for them?

I really like the way they structure that system. They have one ruckman in Gawn, a hybrid forward/ruck in Jackson and two big KPFs.
I really wish we would have Balta to play the Jackson role but I am not sure we can afford to not have him down back. Nankervis, Balta, Lynch and Riewoldt is very well balanced imo.

Basil Z has had a 'mare. Stupid 20.21 suggestion, forget to let Goodwin speak and denied Embley the chance to announce the NS
Basil screwed the whole GF up. Stupid tweet and lame introduction. It was he’s big break to show CH7 he’s the next Bruce. Ending up being a poor mans BT.
Too self indulgent

Petracca, Oliver, Viney and Jackson took full advantage of the dogs mid rotation with about 10 to go in the third. I have not seen the stats but the dee's rucks dominated from here on.
Just got real big, real strong, won every clearance and got it in to the 15m mark in the blink of an eye.
The only time they hit the pockets with penetrating kicks was when they miskicked. They were full on attack and backed every position in to win.
It felt like the dees forward line played a man down all night but kept winning 1 on 2 or 3s, if they were even needed.
Pickett and the straight haired dude with the sore ankle each had a howler.
The dogs chopped the ball out in desperation and were then outnumbered at the drop. It was tiger like by the dees.
The ex docker on the wing and Bradshaw dominated space.
Apart from the second term the Demons outran the doggies in every position. The dogs had to kick to the contest on the boundary.
The ground was unreal. Unreal. In true west Aussie fashion there were fireworks. Much loved over here.
Overall even though it was a blow out it was a great spectacle and I'm rapt for Gawney.

Oh East Melbourne!
Good luck to them - deserved the premiership. Hopefully in 2022 we get as good a run with injuries as they did in 2021. Makes the world of difference.
