A lot of question marks answered around athletic traits, still the risk of not seeing him against the elite. I was never blown away by any one clip or passage of Johnson. The vanilla question can't be answered. His size and athletic traits coupled with the fact he makes the game pretty easy at times make the risk worth taking. I'm starting to think he will be our pick.
I'm comforted by the fact he played well in the reserves finals, I think that is a pretty good standard. The upside is really high with Johnson, it's the kicking that sets him apart from the likes of Knevitt & Long. You could argue that Long is more of a forward threat but that has been more the product of craftiness rather than burst speed and contested marking. I reckon you could plonk Johnson in a number of positions, his agility makes him highly adaptable in a defensive position, his contested marking, whilst not a neon sign headline act, is still strong enough to cut it as an intercepting backman. His coach wants him at Freo and has pushed his case as the ideal Cerra replacement, that is something we could definitely use at Richmond.

Apparently we're still in the hunt for GWS' pick 2(4). The only way they'll trade it is if their target is Andrew or Gibcus and they're sure their man will still be available at their new pick. That hurdle isn't insignificant - Gold Coast at the next pick could be a suitor for either player.

But let's say GWS is open to dealing their pick. We have the most currency in this draft except for Freo but I don't see them trading both their top-10 picks. Hawthorn could outbid us with 5 and next year's first, but would they? Two top-5 picks for one?

Pick 7(9) and next year's first for pick 2(4) and hopefully GWS' 2022 second (might have to settle for third). Gets us Callaghan and say Sonsie at 17. Dream result. Then pick off a couple (Howes, MacDonald, Murley, Williams - or trade two of the 20s picks to say Brisbane for 18 and 41, and get Butler and Jones/Fejo) and maybe sell the last of our 20s picks to the highest bidder (Saints, Bummers, Blosers, Crows, Poort) for a 2022 second-rounder and maybe a third for our fourth if the bidding is fierce. That would give us three or four 2022 second-rounders, two of which we could trade to Brisbane for their first to give them more points for Ashcroft and get us back in the first round.

Winning.

So it's pick 7 & future first for pick 2, 13? I'd sign up for that deal.

Not getting 13 in my deal, but yes, I would do it too. I was saying 7 and a future first for 2 and a future second.
Is the difference between Callaghan & Johnson really that great? That's my only reservation with downgrading a first rounder next year. Potentially you could be throwing away a key position prospect.

I really dont think this is the year to be finessing with picks 3-30.

scattergun them,

Its the year to spread the risk, hedge, with multiple picks.

Other than SA V WA and Vic v Vic, none of them have played each other.

its alot like trying to line up international form in the melbourne spring carnival.

Yeah, but in my scenario we're getting Brisbane's first-rounder, so we're potentially upgrading.

That's what I was getting at before, saying Johnson hasn't played against the best mids because bar Horne they're all Victorian. Those who have watched all the games of all the kids have Callaghan in the top tier of 4 and Johnson in the next group. Johnson got better as the year went on but Callaghan turned heads from day one of the pre-season. He got 76 of a possible 120 votes in Sandy's B&F - that's dominant, in a strong team.

It's the only scenario I'd trade next year's first.

Would we give up Hobbs to get Callaghan?
Dunno if 'we' would. I would.

So you don't like quality mids, you prefer outside flanker types ?
I just dont get the Hobbs angst. He is a quality midfielder. He is not a half back flanker who we all hope turns into this gun midfielder.

Keep it simple people. If you want a midfielder and he is on the board, you take him.

Don't think anyone is disputing that but many don't agree with trading pick 15 to get him, that is too high a price.

Perhaps we can hedge our risk of trading our 2022 first if we expect Short to be given offers that would provide band 1 compo? Prob unlikely but band 2 could get us an end of first round pick.

Don't think Shorty's going anywhere, Gia. Anyway, Brando signing for 5 x 600 only got us Band 3. No one's paying Short that.

I reckon Short is worth more than Brando. If Short has another year like 2020 then he'd have significant interest I'd have thought.

But is he worth more than 5 x 600?

I hope he does have another year like 2020, but I think he'll stay regardless.

If we don't get Hobbs, we need to position our 2nds a little higher and get something between 18 and 24 and nab Conor McDonald. I've watched his video a number of times and love him. Reckon he will turn into a gun.

Not sure how we do it, but really think we should.

Twomey thinks the Hawks are keen for pick 2 as well and will try and get it with pick 5 and 21. Apparently Freo have some interest in Mac Andrew so if that is true GWS will probably want pick 3, 4 or 5 in the deal if they are still keen on him.

Callahan looks alright,

but he'd have to be a champ to be better than 2 of Johnson/Sonsie/JVR/Hobbs/etc

IMO.

I'd sell the farm for Horne-Francis, but not Callahan.

But then again, they probably have never played on each other and Callahan may have towelled him?

Lots of guess work and extrapolation this year.

some say a good reason to pick less, I say the opposite.
