Can't win sometimes, I copped a serve for making the suggestion, I documented the trade like I do every year & now I'm being accused of fantasy trades.

Trades - After securing Riley Collier-Dawkins last night, list managers approached the Western Bulldogs and offered them next year's first for pick 27 & pick 37 (a pick they were using on Rhylee West). Dogs accepted given it was a free hit next year & they also get West.

Pick 20. Riley Collier-Dawkins (rank 18)
Pick 27. Bailey Williams (rank 11)
Pick 37. Jack Bytel (rank 27)
Pick 38. Jack Ross (Ess pick for Saad last year)
Pick 58. Fraser Turner (rank 29)
Pick 62. Tom McKenzie (rank 33)

.
I remember that year well and Bytel/Williams with trading with the Dogs was a no brainer and both were and still are players of need.

Williams has shown glimpses and is athletic with a good leap and aggression, Bytel was injured but was a top rated junior at 16 level just from memory and is a nice size and good inside ball winning ability.

I would take both now at RFC

I think I also mentioned the bogus personality defects levelled at Williams, totally overblown in my opinion. Sonsie presents as a little more fragile to be honest but I'm still fine with that pick, sometimes these are buying signals rather than deal breakers. Kids will be kids of course, we were probably all a little rough around the edges in those formative years, I certainly was & I cringe at some of the poor choices I made.

No doubt recruiting is a tough gig and the only easy draft is the hindsight draft. With the lack of VFL games in the last two years I think it is still far too early to claim any of those picks as a winner or a loser. Patience is the key here. Time will tell.

There's a good article in a certain Website that shows that after we drafted Gibcus we got on the phone to try trade with St Kilda to get Hobbs. They didn't want to go back to 17.
West Coast were called, but were already dealing with Port.
Essendon knocked us back too.

Clearly we wanted Hobbs pretty bad to try three times after our pick.
That is BS

Happy to hear that we tried to improve our hand on draft nights, if you can believe the report that is.

You also said you would have traded back in to 2019 with a 2020 pick, which means you wouldn't have had the pick to trade to Geelong last year and thus wouldn't have had 17 to take Johnson.

There appears to be a lot of cake in your mouth yet still somehow on the table.
A bit unfair of accusing me of cake in my mouth and some on the table, aside from the fact I wasn't on the site to forward a trade idea, you're giving zero cake whatsoever, not even a player in lieu of Johnson. This is what I mean about being hounded either way, I also suggested recruiting Ladhams who could have facilitated some sort of move up the order.

It's a reasonable point and now the pressure is on to find those parts. I think it will be tough, I tend to think you strike while the iron is hot, Clarke seems to be finding the easy parts first and leaving the difficult ones for last. That's not how I tend go about things but once again we have to be patient and see what he produces next year. That's already a key back (Sam Taylor), a ruck/forward (Williams) & a 189cm dual sided mid (Bytel) he's ignored in previous drafts and now a 193cm polished midfielder (Johnson) to add to the list. I'm sceptical, the glow of the Bolton/Graham draft is starting to wear off for me personally.
I rate Bytel but to injury prone for me. Reckon his gettable from saints to.

Jeepers - Williams and Bytel have done Zero at AFL level.

Even less re: being concerned around not taking them (not that we could have anyway) - unless talking make believe trades.

Thought it might be nice to bring some accountability to both Frank & Clarke's strategies and I've tried to document all the opportunities for discusssion and some sort of intellectual debate about list building. But I'm pretty much tired of it now so I might just exit the building for awhile. I left last time because you lot caned me over talking about trading a future first, now I'm just a fantasist playing make believe. I get it now, not worth the hassle, check you later.

I get the feeling the club is working on actually bringing in a big inside mid via trade or free agency but currently cant due to cap constraints but will be in a better position in 12-24 mnths and are just getting the other pieces in order.

KPF & Big Inside mid are the glaring weaknesses on the list currently that need the most urgent attention
Seems these types are what teams get via free agency.

Just on the 2nd tier inside mids, my take on Clarke's view is that they haven't had a chance given they couldn't get into what was/is a pretty decent side the last few yrs & with the VFL being wiped out for 2 seasons effectively now none of them have had any chance to develope let alone push for snr selection. Dow for instance has played 5 VFL games since he was drafted in 2 seasons.....

They were pretty obvious picks, I think I gave an overwhelming tick of approval in that particular draft. As for Bytel & Williams, they have both come from a long way back, the stress fractures not an issue with Bytel and Williams just about to enter the zone where talls hit their straps. Both these players I identified as rare commodities deep in the draft & worthy of an aggressive trade. But you're right, they haven't made it yet but I'm confident they will, already Bytel shaping up as a high tackling ball winner, he's impressed me in the few games I've seen him play a full match.
Also had we taken Taylor we may not have taken Gibcus & would have taken Hobbs this Draft instead. Happy to let our guys do thier thing incl the existing 2nd tier guys & hopefully they get some luck with VFL allowing them to finish the season in the snr's which should be their target for the yr. IMO the Bolton/Graham draft has Clarke well in front, Bolton could literally be anything & is still improving while Graham could be our next Captain. Having said that this crop will either have him in front or dare we say it, behind. But i'd rather judge that after next yrs crop have time to prove their worth. With some possible retirements we could well be going FA targets next yr with only 3 picks in the Draft

Bullus, not sure I've seen anyone caning you or being unreasonable. Part of debating is being challenged. I haven't seen anything that's been out of line with how that's being done. If you have, report it for me. I'll take another look in the AM.
I don't think you can have a say about something and not expect others to question your opinion though. It be a pretty boring site if everyone just had their say and you weren't allowed to question it or disagree with it.

With respect Bully if you’re going to have a crack at the club’s recruiting then you’ve got to have a thick enough skin when a little bit comes back your way.
This recruiting team have been responsible for a few recent Premierships after all so I think they’re going ok all things considered.
I’d hate to see you leave again as like many here I value your contribution but at the end of the day the trade scenarios & opinions in this thread are pure fantasy unless you’re in the industry calling the shots.
So if PRE stops being fun & starts getting too serious for you then perhaps a different avenue is best. I hope you reconsider leaving but if not then good luck.(y)

I think its pretty reasonable to post along the lines of "here is what I would do..."
without someone calling him out and saying get your hand off it and stop the fantasy.
Maybe it's been misread In that way.

Posts doesn't have to be considered abusive but can effectively shout down someone's posts. I think we Need to remember to post with care

After all everything we write on here is simply our views and does not help one player kick the footy. It's just talk about the game we love, so don't see why someone can't post about a trades and doing it differently.

The recruiters in the Afl are full time,so they go to live matches and review footage for over 40 hrs plus week after week ,they also get access to one on one interviews .

The Tigers have a very strong recruiting team Fj who was a integral part of our recruiting of our premierships sides..Hartley who was Ports head recruiter before joining Richmond, and has been a big part of our success in recent years ,as list manager and talent scout.
Clarke has been at the Tigers for over 13 years,so has been a big part of our premiership success in recruiting.

For people who don't go to live matches, and base a lot of their assessments on highlights or power rankings by that idiot Doerre, and then come out and be critical of Richmonds recruiting and strategies is ridiculous and quite bewildering .
