Rant incoming:

First things first, I 100% support a team in Tassie. But I do not support the building of a brand spanking new stadium 100% funded by the taxpayer.

I just wanna have a bit of whinge about the narrative on this issue earlier in the week.

The state opposition have copped it from all angles because they might not necessarily support the concept of the TAS govt paying for half of the new stadium in Hobart.

IMO, the criticism is being directed towards the wrong people… the AFL have demanded Tassie build a stadium and basically threatened to withhold the new licence unless the stadium is built.

A few weeks ago, the AFL signed a new $4.5 billion TV deal, yet expect $750 million of taxpayers money spent on a shiny new stadium.

This is bloody outrageous and insanely arrogant. We should be angry at the AFL, but instead, we are criticising politicians for not coming to the party. The AFL (and their sycophantic media) are playing it smart deflecting the narrative to politicians, but bloody hell, am I the only person that sees through this???

I have long criticised taxpayer funded upgrades to AFL Infrastructure. The $225 upgrade to Marvel – a privately owned stadium – is appalling.

Tasmania is a small state and spending at least $375 million on a stadium is a big hit to their bottom line. If the AFL want a stadium in Hobart, let them pay for it (or pay a large chunk of it).

IMO, they should dump the new stadium concept and renovate Bellerive Oval. I’m sure they can build a grandstand on the hill and increase the capacity to over 25,000 at 30-40% of the cost.
As has been discussed infinitum, they can’t renovate Bellerive. It’s unsuitable for a permanently located team and everything that comes with that.

You either do this properly or you don’t do it at all.

Agree, Ian.

Bit hypocritical of the AFL to demand a gold plated stadium when their love children teams play on the Gold Coast and Western Sydney. Maybe those licences should be withdrawn until those stadiums are also gold plated.
Surely just gold plate the 15 seats at each stadium and that,ll do it Sharpshooter

Correct, but it hasn't stopped money being ploughed into Kitty Litter Park. Still a bowling alley shaped dump

Precisely. And they should have knocked that thing down completely, played home games at Unmarvelous for a year, and built something brand new, ground up, during the course. I actually think they (Geelong and the AFL) tried to do that but the Vic Government and Feds wouldn't come at funding a new and 3rd modern stadium for AFL purposes in Victoria.

The AFL is the Australian Football League- the league. The AFL commission and management run the league. they also run football in Australia. when they are deciding whether to include a team from Tasmania in the AFL are they doing what is in the best interests of the AFL or in the best interests of football in Australia?
With GWS and the Suns they decided on the later, but in this instance they only appear to be looking at the former.

I am not opposed to tax payers contributing to upgrades to stadiums- keeping the MCG state of the art allows Melbourne to host the cricket world cup final for example. but funding for grounds like Kardinia Park- which the Cats essentially own, with a few cricket games thrown in, when the Cats allow it, is not a good use of public money.

If Tassie gets a stadium that they will use 12 months of the year, and the AFL team only gets priority for game time, then it is probably suitable the government funds it. fair chance the AFL commission will want lots of control over the ground.

Yep. The economic equation for Tasmania isn't just simply with the cost of the new stadium, its also what having that stadium and a new team brings to the State. The economic benefits of people being employed across multiple industries both short term and long term, 100,000's of visitors to the state each year, associated industry investment and more revenue and jobs ....the list of economic benefits for Tasmania goes on and on.

It's therefore quite reasonable for the AFL to ask the State government to contribute.

For the new stadium to financially viable, there needs to be 28 events annually at the new stadium according to the PWC independent report.

There is no A-League team in Tassie, and a future A-League team will never play at this stadium. How will they get 7 NRL games and International Rugby games? They will get BBL and international cricket, they will get concerts from time to time… But for the life of me, I don’t know how they will hold enough events to make this work.

Pretty light weight extract. 6 concerts and 7 games of AFL to break even ? Do that standing on ya head !

More importantly, a new stadium with all those events also brings dozens of other revenue streams to the state. Hospitality, tourism, jobs, increased spending to name just a few. The stadium will be a precinct not just a stadium.

Where’s the data on all that ? That’s probably why the BC uses 6 and 7. Not 28.

There’s a reason governments all over the world spend money on such infrastructure, and that is, it’s an investment not a cost.

Should have knocked the dump down, sold the land, and built something halfway up the highway and made it Bulldogs home ground as well.

Has a stadium ever been built or upgraded without a big chunk of government money? l
Pretty sure we the Tigers are getting millions of government money for a trainning ground and admin building, same as pretty much all of the Victoria teams.

I have no issue with the Tas government contributing to a new stadium for an AFL club.

The issue I have is the way the AFL refuses to contribute anything. They have a lot of form on this, the AFL just will not contribute, they expect stadia to be built for them.

I know Richmond are getting Federal and State government money for the Punt Rd upgrade. But the club will also contribute, as is reasonable since the club benefits.

It should be a jointly funded stadium, the AFL benefits and makes a contribution, other sports will be played there too so maybe they can throw in something although the AFL will be the main beneficiary, and the state of Tasmania will benefit so they throw in a substantial contribution.

I would reply to the AFL that, sure, the Tas govt will build the stadium, but that means the Tas govt retains total control over the stadium . . . unless the AFL is willing to pitch in too.

The AFL is/will be making a contribution - to the tune of tens of millions of dollars per year, into perpetuity, like it already does with GC and GWS via its distribution model.
